An officer will arrest you with any knife they'd like to as they can consider it within their own judgement defined as a "dangerous knife". Carrying around a switchblade or automatic knife while not fishing or I believe hunting as well (don't quote me on that) and getting stopped for any reason leading to a search for any reason will land you some jail time along with a misdemeanor charge. They are NOT legal in NYS.

Yeah, that's the tricky thing. You see, you're able to carry it, WHILE you're doing it, and that's it. There's no limiting exception to coming to and from. One can then explain the fact that of course you need to transport yourself to and from that designated activity, however the law states as you carry something like a switchblade outside of the listed exceptions, you then have automatic intent by the laws interpretation, not an officer, to use that as a weapon while it's in your possession. The reason for that is because those classified specific illegal knives listed are by the state's interpretation, made to be used primarily as a weapon and therefore do not offer other use. It considers them while in the possession of such a knife outside of that activity, an unarguable possession of an illegal knife that constitutes intent. So you can skip the speech and head straight to jail instead. Long ago I've heard a switchblade being legal in NYS so as long as the possessor was physically limited or disabled, but I have not read or heard of anything related to the truth of that before and I think it's BS unless someone can find that documentation. Oh yeah, and also, when you get home and put your knife back in a drawer that didn't harm or do anything to anyone other than serve the same purpose of any other knife, that's also illegal possession still.

Yea if you wanna be scared and intimidated by whatever comes out of a cops mouth I guess my box cutter in my glovebox is illegal too..along with my freebie 12" Yankee giveaway bat ?? Cops are supposed to serve and uphold laws, not scare you with their interpretation of what they feel like. Ask @Darth how he feels on that . Everyone from the old man at Home Depot to the old man making pizzas at the local pizza joint have a knife on their belt. That's just me though and my 2 pennies.

I'm not scared? Your context is written out like I was the one who wrote these retarded laws or that I support them or something... The reality is, they ARE illegal to possess and it's too clear to pretend otherwise. I wouldn't try to make sense out of the laws we have either, because their intent is just the same as our gun laws. Nobody cares about home depot workers carrying legal pocket knives or a chef with legal kitchen knives, or a teeneger cutting pizza with a legal pizza cutter. Again, the idea is that under an officer's discretion they can use their determination and depending on their mood that day to decide whether or not the troubled looking 18 year old with smoke weed everyday hat is in possession of a dangerous knife. Maybe he turns out to be an okay kid and lets him go, but if he's carrying a frank beltrame black beauty, he is off to jail GUARANTEED! Police are there to get you for anything they can when you get searched.When they start searching you, they aren't there to help you. Don't put out false information that people look up!

This is another abortion of a law that would be nice to be fixed. Too much left up to the officer whether it's legal or not. I got rid of the only 2 automatic knives I had many years ago, they were cheap and I just didn't care for them. I did have a very nice boot knife that I used all the time for legitimate purposes, mostly fixing the cluster fk wiring in my car. Had to fix my car on the side of the highway and a trooper stopped, seen the knife and told me it was illegal. It was obvious that I used it as a tool on a very regular basis but he still offered me either an arrest or confiscation. I figured it was as simple as he wanted it. A few years later I seen that same trooper and asked him what he did with the knife, he said he through it in the river. Yeah right, his glove box maybe.

Yea you may be correct about "the mood of the officer" but like I said, that's up to you and each individual on how you live your life..as is our tint on our cars and our tires being to worn..saying someone will go to jail "GUARANTEED" is 100% giving false information for people to look at, as it is your assumption and not a written law like I posted. A "switchblade" is as described in the wording of the obscure law .."button,spring or other device in HANDLE of knife". The get around with spring activated knives which many of us carry is that the lever is not in the handle but up top off the handle. I don't make the laws or the knives, but I know what is and isn't one of the 5 illegal types..and so do all the retail stores around that you can buy one at. It's a game as so many other BS things are in our State/Country. You can have a machete because thats no problem but not a 3 inch spring activated saftey knife with a glass breaker and seatbelt cutter..it's dumb but like I said about tint/tires/scanners/radar detectors/shipping ammo to your door when everyone was scared "it's illegal"..no it wasn't, if you read the information you did what you want while others cowered..etc..it's how you choose to live your life one way or a different way. So your scolding of "don't put out false information" was maybe false to you but not to some. You can go by your laws I'll go by the ones written. @togmaster isnt 18 so the examples you throw are irrelevant. like I mentioned, it's just me and my 2 cents. Everyone has the right to read the law and interpret it and choose what to do when they leave the house. I'll get in my dark tinted car, wearing my knife, with my tire a tad bald, and pick up my mail at the post office wearing my gun after picking up my kids at school wearing my gun..that's just me.
New York - Penal Law Section 265.01. A person is guilty of
criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree when:
(1) He possesses any firearm, electronic dart gun, electronic stun
gun, gravity knife, switchblade knife, pilum ballistic knife, metal
knuckle knife, cane sword, billy, blackjack, bludgeon, metal knuckles,
chuka stick, sand bag, sandclub, wrist-brace type slingshot or
slungshot, shirken or "Kung Fu star"; or
(2) He possesses any dagger, dangerous knife, dirk, razor, stiletto,
imitation pistol, or any other dangerous or deadly instrument or weapon
with intent to use the same unlawfully against another; or
(5) He possesses any dangerous or deadly weapon and is not a
citizen of the United States...
Criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree is a class A
misdemeanor.

4. "Switchblade knife" means any knife
which has a blade which opens automatically by hand
pressure applied to a button, spring or other device in
the handle of the knife.
5. "Gravity knife" means any
knife has blade which is released from the handle or
sheath thereof by the force of gravity of the application
of centrifugal force which, when released, is locked in
place by means of a button, spring, lever, or other
device. [Note: In NYC, and potentially in other NY
jurisdictions, this definition is construed to apply to
ANY folding knife with a blade that locks open. ]
5-a. "Pilum ballistic knife" means any knife which
has a blade which can be projected from the handle by hand
pressure applied to a button, lever, spring or other
device in the handle of the knife.
5-b. "Metal knuckle knife"
means a weapon that, when closed, cannot function as a set of
metal knuckles, nor as a knife and when open, can function as
both a set of metal knuckles as well as a knife.
