A friend of mine was arrested with a cheapo switchblade he bought in PA 20 years ago.
He was arrested, charged and CONVICTED in a NYS court of 4th degree criminal possession of a weapon.
He had a lawyer but wss found guilty and paid a fine.
No jail or probation.
When he tried to buy a shotgun, he wss denied. After sending in his paperwork, he found out that charge is considered a "serious offence".
He is now attempting to get his firearms rights restored with a certificate of relief.
It IS illegal to carry a switchblade in NYS, fact.
He wss told that if he had threatened someone with it, the charge would have been worse.

You can have a machete because thats no problem but not a 3 inch spring activated saftey knife with a glass breaker and seatbelt cutter..it's dumb but like I said about tint/tires/scanners/radar detectors/shipping ammo to your door when everyone was scared "it's illegal"..no it wasn't, if you read the information you did what you want while others cowered..etc..it's how you choose to live your life one way or a different way. So your scolding of "don't put out false information" was maybe false to you but not to some. You can go by your laws I'll go by the ones written. @togmaster isnt 18 so the examples you throw are irrelevant. like I mentioned, it's just me and my 2 cents. Everyone has the right to read the law and interpret it and choose what to do when they leave the house. I'll get in my dark tinted car, wearing my knife, with my tire a tad bald, and pick up my mail at the post office wearing my gun after picking up my kids at school wearing my gun..that's just me.

New York - Penal Law Section 265.01. A person is guilty of
criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree when:
(1) He possesses any firearm, electronic dart gun, electronic stun
gun, gravity knife, switchblade knife, pilum ballistic knife, metal
knuckle knife, cane sword, billy, blackjack, bludgeon, metal knuckles,
chuka stick, sand bag, sandclub, wrist-brace type slingshot or
slungshot, shirken or "Kung Fu star"; or
(2) He possesses any dagger, dangerous knife, dirk, razor, stiletto,
imitation pistol, or any other dangerous or deadly instrument or weapon
with intent to use the same unlawfully against another; or
(5) He possesses any dangerous or deadly weapon and is not a
citizen of the United States...
Criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree is a class A
misdemeanor.

4. "Switchblade knife" means any knife
which has a blade which opens automatically by hand
pressure applied to a button, spring or other device in
the handle of the knife.
5. "Gravity knife" means any
knife has blade which is released from the handle or
sheath thereof by the force of gravity of the application
of centrifugal force which, when released, is locked in
place by means of a button, spring, lever, or other
device. [Note: In NYC, and potentially in other NY
jurisdictions, this definition is construed to apply to
ANY folding knife with a blade that locks open. ]
5-a. "Pilum ballistic knife" means any knife which
has a blade which can be projected from the handle by hand
pressure applied to a button, lever, spring or other
device in the handle of the knife.
5-b. "Metal knuckle knife"
means a weapon that, when closed, cannot function as a set of
metal knuckles, nor as a knife and when open, can function as
both a set of metal knuckles as well as a knife.

Don't forget, "or other device", such as a lever on a spring assisted knife would be part of the tang in many instances that resides inside of the bolster or handle of the blade as one piece. I'm trying not to state from my personal opinion, I'm more interested in the obvious information right in front of me. It doesn't matter what choice someone makes for themselves, and for the purpose of this discussion, we should focus on what NY law states if you want to ask the question about legality. I'd like you to post maybe a couple examples of what you think is legal.

:D Pretty much.

Not to confuse two separate instances though. One being, an officer's POTENTIAL "dangerous knife" decision enforced on an otherwise unregulated knife scenario. The other being an illegal knife without the need of an officer's interpretation scenario. The first one was used as an example to show they don't need much to arrest you.

I of course oppose all knife legislation as a matter of principal however I have always considered automatic knives, OTF knives in particular, to be novelties seriously lacking in practical use.

My Benchmades and Spydercos aren't even assisted and can be rapidly opened or closed single handed. Automatics are an unnecessary complication, withbtge added bother requiring some provision against unintentional blade deployment.

Don't need no stinking button to open a damned knife worth it's salt... Don't need no spring to assist either!!!

A well made knife, yes folks, one that costs some... Made with bearings, (speed bearings even better), opens as easy, or as quick as any of the others "automatic" or "assisted".
:)

Just do some homework and then there's no issue for carrying your expensive letter opener that's razor sharp ;)

You'd all love my Jim Burke TAD Edition Hitman Custom, lol... Finest letter opener you'd ever seen, and I carry it everywhere, just in case you know, a messenger finds me and delivers a Western Union I need to open right away, you'd never know...

Nobody needs full auto when you can easily rapid fire most semi autos or bump fire them. A good semi auto firearm with a nice trigger can shoot quickly enough for most people anyways.

I'm a Benchmade fan and cary one every day. I'm also a fan of well made and engineered machines like firearms and automatic knives. So to follow your logic your firearm of choice would be a revolver because why complicate things with a semi auto pistol. Well made automatic knives like the Benchmade I posted above are not complicated and are dependable. I wouldn't hesitate to carry one.

I had one and a switchblade for a while. I sure thought I was badass.

On a more serious note in NYS isn't possession consider d intent to harm unless used while hunting or fishing.
