I would Try to fill as many water containers as possible while there was still water pressure.
Try to get situation updates on the radio.
If it still seemed calm try to run to the store and get last minute supplies.
Make sure I knew where my family is. Depending on the situation probably go to the ex's and pickup kids.

If it seems like a slowly developing matter, I'd go to work, stopping by to check on my kids first (they are right by work). I'd be able to ascertain much more info from work than sitting at home.
If vehicles weren't working, I'd consider the situation much worse and head straight to the kids by any means necessary.

Not trying to insult anyone you quoted, or anyone at all for that matter - but, in all honesty, most people, deep inside, find such scenarios hard to take seriously.
Many, myself included, don't want to believe something REALLY long-term will occur.
That being said, short term (a month or less) emergencies without electricity are certainly very possible.
We have to "bug in", because we're too old to survive without shelter, and our meds are necessary to stay alive - insulin for example - my fiancee is diabetic.
We try to maintain a good in-house supply of canned goods, rice, dry beans, water, meds, warm clothes and operational, functional firearms with adequate ammo.
I don't have any illusions - anything that goes past 2 months and we're probably both toast.

You'd see a pretty wild realignment of who looked up to who, that's for sure. Celebrities wouldn't be of interest to anyone. Suddenly the local boys with the cows and diesel tractors sans electronics would be famous.

Agreed. I should have expected more of this before I made this thread. That's ok I get it.
My purpose was to seriously think about or consider some different ideas that I hadn't thought of before that's all.
On the topic of insulin...I thought I had seen some high quality solar powered refrigerating coolers somewhere. They weren't cheap but they might be suitable to keep insulin cold as a non electric grid stand-alone option.
It's actually a difficult topic to internalize - basically, how exposed is my family if the SHTF? Have I done enough to increase our survival time? With limited $$$, what is my first priority?
And yet, I sit here reading and typing on NYGF with 4 gallon jugs to fill with water, add bleach to, and store inconspicuously in the basement (there are 4 units in our building). Easier to store and move upstairs a couple gallons at a time.
******Re: the solar powered coolers would be a great idea. If you get a place to look or who actually have them, please post it here. Very interested.

If you have access to a lake / ice then you could keep an awful lot cold for quite a long time. You just have to store enough ice. IMO, this is more of a year 2 concern. Year 1 would be too volatile to risk that kind of exposure, both while cutting ice and while transporting it. In the winter time you would have ample time to plan for refrigeration if it was life or death. In the summer you may be out of luck.

Those solar panels and their corresponding circuitry would almost definitely be toast after an EMP.

Oddly enough two of my immediate concerns would be 1. What my landlord would do as far as letting us stay Etc.. Her family owns 100 acres and have all built houses around the farm house I live in. I believe they are all hunters, so it could turn out to be a good thing if they let us stay. Or they could want us out and depending on their state of mind and situation could be bad.
2. The other tenants in the farm house. The house has been split into 3 units. While we are friendly and don't bother each other, we don't really see each other or interact. So they would be wild cards as far as what they might do.

well. my response to said scenario is going to be different depending the time of year. If it's in the winter, Im bugging in. Im going to stay right here and let the world do it's thing. I have everything I need right here. All i need to do is defend it. I have power, water, food and defensive measures.
If it happens in the summer, I hope Im already at my BOL.....in which case, I don't give a crap what happens. I'll easily be all set for at least 6 to 12 months.....and no one will be able to get to me. My BOL is only accessible by boat in the summer or snowmobile in the winter, and if it's a mild winter the lake will be to dangerous to cross. I'll be all alone. I'll have plenty of food, solar panels/batteries and propane for at least 6 months.
So I really don't care one way or another what happens. I think Im in pretty good shape

Im glad I didnt make your list of baddies because I literally would bring my 338 to its spot, turn on the generator and make coffee.
Weve been planning for this for 15 years.
My generator runs on NG and Ill have no pressure issues, thats been dealt with.
While im waiting for the crew to get here, im having coffee dammit!!
