Best 22lr Bolt Rifle?

Got a favorite? I've got an empty space on the rack that needs a 22 bolt gun. After browsing around, it seems there are plenty of rifles to choose from that are affordable, well made, and very accurate. I almost went for a Browning T Bolt, but folks complain about the trigger...and no good way to improve it. Care to chime in?

I do have a Mossberg 44US that needed a little attention, but have not spent any time with it yet.

I love my Ruger 77/22 I bought it used about 8 or 9 years ago got a really good deal on it for $400.00. It already had a trigger job and shot well enough but I still put a Shilen factory contoured barrel on it now I can shoot 10rd groups at 50 yards off a bench that a dime can cover using CCI SV ammo! It is what is keeping me from buying the Ruger precision rifle and I do also have a Ruger American Rimfire (RAR) which I would recommend for small game hunting and plinking.

The 77/22 I was shooting in a Benchrest league for a few years in the sporter class with a Weaver T-24 scope I did quit well with it. I now plan on changing out the Weaver scope to Nikon prostaff EFR 3-9 scope that I also have on the RAR and my 96/22 for more off-hand shooting.

My daughter has an Anshutz 22 rifle and the Ruger American Rimfire (RAR) both are really great rifles. The only bolt 22s I have are 22mag RARs.

The RAR with it's modular polymer stock makes it an ideal family or training rifle.

The gun I learned to shoot on was this ancient Savage bolt 22. Don't recall the model number but do still love that rifle. Not sure if Savage still makes bolt .22s still or not. I've heard good things about the Ruger American Rimfire, especially if you're on a budget.

Yes Savage does still make 22lr bolt guns and they are quit popular! I have a 1930's Savage model 19NRA with target peep-sights that is a real good shooter.

Also Marlins are good Rifles too!

I'm kind of surprised no one mentioned the Ruger Precision Rimfire. I've got a Savage MK II, and a couple of Winchester bolt action .22's, but the Ruger beats them all as far as fun and accuracy. The Ruger Precision Rimfire also uses the same magazine as the 10/22. If you're into precision shooting, the Ruger is hard to beat value wise. The trigger is very smooth and crisp. The adjustable buttstock is a big plus too.

I did mention it in post #3 that the only thing keeping me from buying one is my 77/22 , So far I have been known to have weak moments though!

CZ, Savage (100+ models...are you kidding?), Marlin always come up. No T Bolts? Me, I can't do synthetic stocks. The 77/22 is appealing, but apparently new is 22 Hornet only...nope. Anschutz, sure, but $1,200 or so is ng. And, forged or button rifled?

Mostly punching paper. I've got some woods, lots of oaks, and grey squirrels to harass. Having grown up with used rifles, it's nice now in my old age to be able to buy something new and exactly what I want. That T-Bolt really appeals to me...

I can understand that! Then get the T-Bolt. I just checked in out fine looking rifle! Are you think about the standard or heavy barrel model?

16.5” barrels aretypically the ideal barrel length for .22LR to keep them supersonic. Subsonic is 20.5” I believe.

Standard Velocity ammo is more accurate, in the 1070/1080 range. My 77/22 likes CCI-SV the best.

That's interesting. I am pretty sure ny XT is 18" and it groups subsonic better than standard.

Those old mossberg rifles are fine and very accurate .22 plinking rifles. I own a few myself. I believe the 44US was a training rifle and shoots very accurately for a 50+ yr. old rifle.
For something new I’ll add my name to the CZ recommendations.
I have a CZ 452 American in .22 & .17 and both rifles are tack drivers.
