Home defense, hunting, or range toy? If it is home defense, you are better off featureless. It takes more complicated motor skills to operate one of those mag loaders under stress than it takes to drop a mag with the push of a button and insert another one.

I think fixed mags are more comfortable and the bf loaders work good.

That said if I wanted a self defense gun than featureless is the better choice. Much faster to clear if it double feeds.

If you use a fixed magazine, be sure you use a mag that has an easily removable base plate. That way, if you get a double-feed or other jam, you can still empty the magazine from the bottom. Using a welded magazine will leave you trying to fix jams on a live rifle by playing around through the ejection port.

Consult with a competent, well vetted, source of legal assistance (lawyer), who can explain the parameters of the (very vague & unconstitutional) law, as it relates to the various options on the market that can establish an attempt at compliance (& mitigate liability).

That being said, if your research leads you to a certain level of comfort, I would consider the “Non NFA Other” option.

I did a maglock conversion for a friend. Took about 5 mins. for a very simple install. (you can go the hardware store route - nut and screw, but my friend wanted the maglock.)
He (friend) considered his options... he wasn't happy with the spur grip or patrick trigger guard, he didn't like the looks of the thordsen stock.
He decided on the maglock button, magazine with removal bottom plate and ma loader. He's pleased with the results.
This is what he wanted on his rifle. others may prefer something else... (your rifle, your money, your choice.) Good luck.

Featureless with a spur and handstop (not a grip of course) to help you drive the rifle into your shoulder for control works extremely well. I agree with the sentiment above that fixed mag is excellent for benchrest/target and hunting while featureless set up as above is a great choice for heavy training and home defense

Yes, I agree and hear ya, we live in a shithole when it comes to gun laws,& tax's and, and, etc, not going down that road we can all agree on that for sure! All things considered, I was looking for experience with the items I listed and still am kinda. I understand if no one has used any of the above but after looking it just appears to be one of the better options! Also even though I did mention I sold all my "stuff" awhile ago I have acquired parts & piece's through the years & if put together it will NOT be featureless so that's why I'm looking at the above options. It will be a while before I complete everything and even get a new lower but just gathering thoughts and ideas. Thanks again guys,, guess I'll go pull the handle on my Dillon for a while and at least be content with kicking out a bunch of quality ammo!

Me, personally, the idea of a dedicated range toy kinda sticks in my craw. I am a form follows function kind of guy and having to work around a fixed magazine would really irritate me. I would rather run a Thordsen stock or more ideally an SCR lower. I would also consider alternative platforms.

Range toy for me is a firearm that is only used at the range and has no other purpose. Back in the day my AR was my home defense gun. It would be what I would grab first. Before a handgun even. After the fixed mag fiasco came to fruition, it no longer served that role and became a range toy until it was sold.

My 1911 also became a range toy after I stopped carrying it when I decided to ccw something else. It only got shot at the range and served no other role until I eventually got rid of it.

As far as not using it, if it serves a role whether in the back of a police cruiser or next to a nightstand, it’s serving a purpose for potential use against someone meaning you harm.

Hunting rifles aren’t range toys. Handguns that you carry for defense or sitting on nightstands for home defense aren’t range toys. Fixed mag ARs, other rifles, or handguns that only see use at the range that are kept unloaded and tucked away no matter what their configuration are range toys.

That's what I used. They didn't have any with the holes so I ground the spikes off. I put a tac on it with a mig so a bit more permanent than epoxy. My AR is only used for hunting so it works for it's intended purpose. P-Mag base comes off easy to unload or clear jams. Only had one jam and it wasn't fault of the rifle.

When I sleep I hang it on the bedroom door.
Sometimes I have the Ace 308 standing by instead.
All the outer walls of my place are concrete as is the floor so fuck it I figure.

A handgun round from 9mm on up will penetrate more walls than a 5.56 in most cases. 5.56 FMJ or hollow points usually fragments in drywall while bonded jacketed lead or solid copper handgun rounds sail on through.

As my esteemed colleague above pointed out, the tendency of 5.56 bullets to deviate, tumble and fragment into pieces when they hit anything solid is one of the reasons I have moved to the AR as an HD tool. Tgis is after seeing some eye opening demonstrations of the penetration of pistol ammo and especially buckshot through common household barriers. 5.56x45 on the other hand generally won't have much effect having gone through wood, concrete, metal or lamenated glass. Even drywall will start 5.56 bullets to tumbling.
I do use soft points which will get you a modicum of barrier penetration but after having gone through one layer it won't get through much more having expanded other than soft tissue situated immediately behind.

I get what you’re saying. However I think the distinction is, in the unlikely chance that you needed a firearm for self defense, there are some that are the “best“ option and some that aren‘t. I consider my long guns with attached lights, and my full size pistols and revolvers (again, usually with lights) to be potential home defense guns. Any semi auto gun I own has to have the ability to accept detachable magazines for it to be viable in that role, especially with a 10 round capacity. As far as CC, I’ll take anything in .380 up without a light, as long as it’s reliable, though I prefer a 8+ round capacity.

Range toys to me are .22 lr rifles and pistols, single action revolvers, break action shotguns, bolt action rifles and any fixed mag rifle that wasn’t designed to be fixed mag. Basically guns you own purely for fun that don’t serve any other role for you. You could defend yourself with a fixed mag AR just like you could a lever action, but there are objectively better choices. I personally wouldn’t be willing to risk clearing jams and double feeds and having to learn how to utilize those loaders just to have a pistol grip and muzzle device on what I intended to serve as a defensive firearm.

I don’t think range toy is a pejorative term BTW, rather a way to classify a gun’s role (like “benchrest rifles”).

If so, you feel it’s “over gassed”? If DD, what’s the dimensions on:

• Gas Journal?
• Gas Port?
• Distance from the shoulder to the gas port?

Reason I ask is because I’ve heard there’s some variance between individual DD of the same model.

Lancer mag? If so, how’s it treating you? I’ve heard mixed reviews. I personally run Magpul, GI, etc (Have used other brands, found those to be solid)

What RDS?
