Critics call for new rules for online fundraisers after protest convoy takes anonymous donations
Some warn anonymous donations could allow big businesses, foreign governments to influence Canadian politics
Critics are calling on the federal government to introduce new rules for online fundraising campaigns after a fundraiser for this weekend's protest in Ottawa against vaccine mandates raised millions of dollars — in part from anonymous donors and people using fictitious names.
Green Party parliamentary leader Elizabeth May said the GoFundMe fundraiser for the protest convoy raises concerns about whether such campaigns could be used by big businesses or foreign state actors to circumvent Canada's political financing rules.
An analysis by CBC News of donations made since Monday found that while thousands of donations were made by average Canadians or Canadian businesses, more than one third of the donations were anonymous or made under aliases — names of other people or invented titles like "Justin Trudeau's Conscience" or "Dump Trudeau."
A number of other donations appear to have come from abroad. In the comments section of the donation page, some donors said they were sending support from foreign countries, including the United States, the U.K., Australia and Poland.

Trudeau flees as trucker convoy enters Ottawa
As thousands of protesters entered Ottawa, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family were moved from their home to an undisclosed location somewhere in the city on Saturday afternoon due to security concerns, CBC reports.
A "Freedom Convoy" of some 2,700 trucks entered the Canadian capital city of Ottawa Saturday to protest Trudeau's COVID-19 policies, Reuters reported. According to the Independent, around 100 big rigs blockaded a main street running past the Canadian parliament building.
The protest has drawn criticism from many sides. The Canadian Trucking Alliance condemned the convoy. Nova Scotia banned people from congregating along the highways to support the protesting truckers. A Washington Post cartoonist drew a convoy of tractor-trailers with "Fascism" written on the side of each one. Trudeau said Friday that the convoy members and their supporters hold "unacceptable views," The Guardian reported.

GREAT FALLS — U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) said in a news release on Saturday, January 29, 2022, that there are "potential travel delays" at the Sweetgrass, MT/Coutts, Alberta border crossing due to the closure of Canadian Highway 4, which is north of the border crossing.
The agency said just after 7 p.m. that Canadian Highway 4, north of the Sweetgrass, MT/Coutts, Alberta border crossing has been closed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
CBC Calgary reported on Saturday: "RCMP say a large demonstration has blocked off Highway 4 in southern Alberta in both the north and southbound lanes near the village of Coutts, Alta., stopping traffic to and from the Canada-United States border crossing. Cars, trucks, farm tractors and other vehicles have filled the highway — from south of Lethbridge, Alta., to the Canada-United States border crossing in Coutts — in support of a national trucker convoy that has arrived in Ottawa, with a stated goal of protesting the trucker COVID-19 vaccine mandate."
