Carrying a Rifle in the Adirondacks

So I want to go camping at the Adirondacks (like sleeping bag and tarp only) with my friend, was wondering if I can bring my rifle for protection? I’m just paranoid about the black bears and yes you say that “they won’t touch you blah blah” well when you’re sleeping they might get curious and if black bears attack they go for the kill unlike Grizzly’s.

I always carry a rifle when I camp in the ADK. For people, not bears. The bears won't attack you lol.

Unless I'm mistaken, DEC no longer has jurisdiction in state parks. I believe one of Cuomo's ball licking buddies convinced him the Forest Rangers are better equipped for their jobs.

When I went with my wife and two friends, it was the end of August. DEC cop told me I don’t need to bring my bear spray but I took it anyway. My friend was on the outmost spot in the lien-to so it would have given me enough time to get my spray if he started screaming.

Camping in "The Adirondacks" covers a lot of territory. State Park? State Forest? State Land? Private Land? Wildlife Management Area? As has been stated, any type of NYS-controlled property requires review of that area's regulations, and of ANY questions, contact the Agency in charge.

That said, in most areas you should be able to keep a rifle handy. Pretty remote.

Bear spray is plenty sufficient for the ADK. There has not been a reported bear attack there in many years, and bear spray works darn well against NYS black bears.

Just a curious FYI for those want to know, the only recorded black bear fatality in New York State since the year 1900 occured in 2002 in Fallsburg NY (Catskills) when a mother left an infant unattended in a stroller and a bear wandered by and saw an easy meal.

And if you are unfortunate enough to use your rifle and shoot a bear, DEC will be out there doing a CSI on the scene and looking to charge you.

Need to prove shit? DEC can do whatever the fuck it wants! As long as you leave the animal and report it (not taking the animal, trophy, etc.). What's the problem? Can't prove shit! Or are they going to put body cameras on all animals, or hell, any person in State land be required to wear them...? Anyways...

Bear comes too close, which isn't a natural thing for them anyway, I'm not gonna try and figure out what it's intent is...

You camped before? Know how to camp out in the wild? Like not sleeping with the clothes on that you were wearing when you ate? Tying all the garbage in a bag and lift it up off the ground (in a tree). Etc., Etc... And yes, go to bed wearing sneakers, hahaha, cause you just got to be faster than your friend!

This right here. If you kill a bear out of season you better have damn good proof that killing the bear was warranted. I’ve camped in the Adirondacks many many times over the years. They are mostly curious and if you don’t leave any food around the camp site they will generally move on. If a young bear happens upon your camp it can easily be chased away with a little yelling. I’ve chased them away with nothing more than banging a couple of cooking pans together

Camping at Blue Mt Lake back in the late 70's with a couple friends.One of them, Joe was making a PBJ when a bear came out of the tree line and Bee lined right toward Joe.At the time Joe was in school studying to become a wildlife biologist,so he had some knowledge of such things.He began slowly walking backwards,talking in a calm way to the bear.The bear kept coming,not overly aggressive,but deliberately.Joe kept backing up til he was in the water as the bear just kept coming til Joe was about chest deep and realized he was holding the jar of jelly,DOH.I've never laughed so hard in my life as when Joe tossed the jar back on shore,it broke and the bear ate it all,even the broken glass shards.He then turned and walked back towards Joe,nose in the air sniffing and snorting,shucks,no more jelly.He just headed back into the woods.We had no guns and have camped many times in the Adk's and never got eaten by a bear and have seen many.If I am carrying,which I always do,I am more concerned about stumbling on a meth lab than a bear.
