When you carry a gun you must also know the law and use "Discretion" in an intelligent way. Now think of it from the other side. You are in the crowd and something is going on so you get closer to see what is happening and next thing you know some guy is pointing a gun at you.
Now you are looking at a situation that gives you every right to use deadly force and had someone been armed in that group and fired upon Strickland they would be justified. The difference is Strickland escalated the situation by pulling a gun first and pointing it at several people without just cause. What would have happened if he had not pulled a gun we do not know. Had he been attacked by a mob he would have a defense and a lot of bruises.
While trying to answer my own question, I found this guy. Run for your life, violence is bad!!!!

I watched the video and at no time just before he pulled his gun was he totally surrounded. He was moving in a backwards direction and no one was stopping his rearward movement. Lets call an ace and ace and a SPADE A SPADE. Don't be making up stuff that did not happen.

Someone that is reasonably in fear for their life (or a potential ass kicking) has every right to defend themselves. It's very easy to sit here on the sideline and say there were no deadly threats there, but we've all seen what the antifa mobs do. Not to mention we only get a few seconds of video before he's unholstered. What happened the prior 5 minutes? He was retreating the whole time and the mob was following him. There were at least a dozen people within the 21 foot radius for the entire video leading up to when he actually drew.

No one disputes having a right to defend. You fail to mention of those 21 people who was the threat? All, One, None. If you think your ass is about to get kicked, pulling a gun before the ass kicking begins just might land you in Jail. Not at all Will. What I am saying is reasonable people do not go into known bad areas unless they absolutely have too. He made his decision and now he is paying the price of that decision. Now if you think going to a Trump rally when you hate him and are going there to protest I would also advise you to stay away. Now lets assume you live in some city that has dangerous areas and good areas. Do you wish to go to that dangerous area to exercise your first amendment right and tell all those knot head drug addicts what assholes they are? I think Not.

Do you think you can legally pull a gun in a simple fist fight because you are loosing. How about someone beating your head in while your laying on the ground. What law abiding citizen gets into fist fights? I sure as hell don't or ever plan on. If it came down to one, my life would be at danger because I don't know the other's intentions. I'm not going to get shanked or my head caved in with a brick. Plenty of warning would be given by me to back off.
