I am currently interested in applying to get a pistol license in New York County (Manhattan). However, I have struggled with alcohol abuse since my early 20s and have been admitted to rehab and the hospital for my alcoholism several times throughout my life. Does anyone here know whether going to rehab for alcoholism is something that could prevent me from getting a pistol license in this state (particular in NYC)? I have never been arrested nor had any court summons whatsoever in my life. Thanks in advance.

Truthfully, very high chances you will be denied, you need to het a 2nd amendment lawyer and fight for one buddy. Realisticly it is going to cost you big bucks in my humble opinion.

Appears to me all counties care about it and ask about alcohol abuse on the application or permit. I can't find much online about it, including any court cases. I would guess people with alcoholism have been forthcoming and received permits. I'd also guess that damn near nobody who has alcoholism is part of this select few; it's going to be hard.

Get whatever form you have to fill out and read it through. They don't ask, you don't tell. If something puzzles you with regard to a possible legal issue, then, if it is that important to you, talk to an attorney versed in that field of law.

First and only post here. I digress. I'll leave any posts for assistance to those who're buying what he's selling.
No DUIs or anything of that nature (can't really own a car here anyway so that hasn't really been something that could occur for me).
I looked over application and there doesn't seem to be anything that tries to solicit this information. The only related thing that it refers to are psychiatric evaluations/hospitalizations and vague "conditions that may be make handling a firearm unsafe." I think I will just apply and see how it goes. My visits to private rehab facilities and hospitals are confidential anyway and wouldn't come up on a background check right?

If you conceal the alcoholism you still have one huge strike against you, Manhattan. That'll raise your chance to 0.15 or so. Unless you're well connected or privileged.

Exactly. I think this is a very overlooked fact. Many of us need to drink because we can literally die if we try to stop (delirium tremors, etc). However, it is not like we go around in a state of drunkenness. I would be more concerned about an alcoholic handling a weapon without alcohol.

I don't know about NYC , or how deep they will look into your past. One thing I do know is that if you are caught lying about anything it is an automatic permanent denial.
Slow detox will cure you of that.

It’s just as easy to get a residence permit in the city as anywhere else, just no carry. BUT, that’s for people without past issues.

Why not? If I go to work everyday and come home and down a pint of vodka, why should my right to bear arms be infringed?
