Department issued is the standard, although I've heard of places where choosing and buying your own equipment is the norm, including guns and ammo.

When I was with the first federal agency for which I worked, it was ammo they issued or personal ammo within certain guidelines. Second agency was issued or personal ammo fitting specs then changed to issue only. The one from which I retired was issue only as I recall. When assigned on detail to a specfic other agency it was whatever we were allowed to carry by our home agency but they preferred high speed, light weight, HP ammo to avoid over penetration in our particular duties with that agency. Other agencies to which I was detailed wanted us to carry what we used normally at our own agency.
We usually did not get the most expensive ammunition but it was high quality and fairly expensive nonetheless. We used some wadcuter for practice on my first agency but all actual carry ammo in the other ones - even for practice. It was excellent to practice with the actual ammo on which your life might depend.
I never turned down the offers of free issued practice ammo when they were made. Any LEO would be out of his mind to do so if it was quality ammo like my agencies issued.

Ranger T series is popular from what I understand. As are all the other usual suspects that we use.
I look at all the "defensive" ammo but most are too expensive for practice. At least for me. I use
the cheap winchester range packs (200) rds. But I do have some 9mm nato rds.
I agree with glenb in that you should practice with the same rds. you intend on using for edc.

I notice a difference between the cheap 115 gr FMJ'S compared to my Federal HST. When I use the Nato FMJ's, I can't tell the difference.
My only problem is that the Nato rounds have dried up everywhere at both my online and local source.

Put 100 rounds of the intended defensive ammo through your gun to verify reliable function, after that just practice with them same weight and pressure level of FMJ for practice. Run a box of the good stuff every so often thereafter.
Are you talking difference in muzzle flash, recoil? I am finding the HSTs to have noticeably less flash than other brands.

NATO specs a 115gr and a 124gr right? A little hotter than standard but not +p levels? I have switched to the 124gr HSTS from the 147gr due difficulty in finding cheap 147gr FMJ for practice.
I am keeping a 1k round stash of my HSTs, I buy the practice ammo as I go but I know I should stock some as well.

Agreed. I buy a box of new carry ammo every year and shoot the old box.
Oh I am positive of the 115gr, wasn't sure if there was a 124gr as well.
I will be going through 400 (!) Rounds of my stash. 100 rounds of standard, 100 rounds +p through both of my new pistols. I may pick up some gold dots, golden sabers ect for the report.
That does sound like a good idea. I just cringe at the prices. Although I think they're only going to get worse.
What's $30, $40 even $50 a year?

I've heard that Federal HST and Speer Gold Dots are the most common among LE. I use 9mm 124 gr HST. Masaad Ayoob recommends carrying whatever your local police department carries in case you ever need to use it as your defense in a trial. Massad Ayoob: Police ammo for the rest of us?
I shoot a box or two a year to make sure that they still work reliably in my carry gun. I've shot a few hundred of the HST rounds and have never had an issue with one of them.

Oh if you don't want a live one I can get you a very good deal. Really just looking to get rid of the dead ones, I mostly deal in live you see. In fact I have one you can have for free, just.......... bring a tarp and a bucket.
