Just some close ups of the Choate extender. you can see the lip between the stock. Will either have to sand or perhaps use some filler on the extender to build it up so its flush.
did you insert the heat shields?

Yes. I had to cut them down as well and re-secure them with JB weld.

the upper is the original grey, definitely stands out. The slip ring stands out the most. The ejection port cover is black as well as the charging handle.

Okay. It's tough to tell with some of the pictures I was able to find online. Some look grey, some look darker almost black. The complete builds Brownells offers seem to only come in the grey, but with the stripped receivers they offer in either grey or black. I ordered mine in the grey so hopefully they look like yours. They were a blem set, so who knows what the blem is.

Brownells is out of the grey for the slab side stripped, as well as the 16A1 in grey. I wanted to go with the 16A1 so I could go with a captive pivot pin. Out of stock on both in grey.

Yes, but I think that is just the stock they had allocated for individual stripped receivers. They must have enough of the grey receivers for their upper/lower complete builds and then of course when I ordered my blem set they had the set in stock in black or grey. They were also at the same time, out of the non-blem individual receivers like you said.

Brought the A1 receiver set home. The receivers are definitely blems. The upper has a slightly more purple grey anodizing and the lower is more gun metal grey. I wish they were both one or the other, but hey, they were blems on sale so whatever. I think they still look cool AF! There are some rough spots also, but very small and I don't care. It's a gun.

Spoke to a Brownells rep today, stripped grey lowers and complete 16A1 uppers in grey will be back in stock some time around end of June early July due to the pandemic shutting down the manufacturing, and current inventory selling without being able to replenish, so looks like my throwback is gonna be on hold for a little bit till they restock.

That sucks Elwood. I'm sure you already plan to, but I'd keep checking back weekly, if not daily. I never count on those email alerts to reach me in time. The product is always sold out again by the time I get the email it's back in stock.
Were you going to use the A1 lower with the magazine button gate or the other lower with no mag gate?

I wanted to go with a 16A1 lower in the original grey so I could use a captive pivot pin, since it’s gonna be a fixed mag I’ll be separating the receivers pretty often when shooting to reload. Even though the slab side is the correct period lower, most people won’t know any better, was hoping to score a pair of lowers and do a full length A1 as well, but the full length complete uppers are sold out as well with the same lead time.

Here is a question. Since I've never messed with muzzle devices, what is needed for a flsah supressor? You have a crush washer and then a lock ring? Or is it just the crush washer or just the lock ring?

I know it's more than you need and not the A1 lower, but it is the lower that is on the 605. It has the channel for the forward take down pins. It's also at close to the normal price for just the lower. And hey, If you did this and don't want the stripped upper, I'd buy it off you if the finish is more the gunmetal grey than the purple grey mine is. And if not, you'd have another part to start another build someday.

Have to admit, I'm thinking of selling the midlength retro gun. Perhaps I'll keep the triangle handguards and sell it with the regular round handguards
(it would still look cool) or maybe I'll just sell it with the custom handguards if that is the deal breaker. I can always make another pair now that I've done it and know what to do. I did take it to the range and it worked fine. I didn't sight it in because my focus was getting my home defense guns ready, but it functions fine. It seems to have more kick oddly.

I got in for 2 grey XM’s. Good call on the heads up corgi. I been checking every day waiting for them to restock. I think their inventory is coming in drips an drabs. It’s been like an Easter egg hunt gathering up parts.

Wait I'm confused, so did you get the receiver I linked, the m16A1, or did you get a different one? It was really weird because it would list as in stock and then it would list as out of stock. Refreshing the page would seem to change the stock status...Don't know what they have going on. In any case, glad I was able to catch it for you. I don't think you realize that I am just as excited for your build as I am my own, lol.

I just went ahead and ordered an AO Precision M16 BCG in phosphate for 89 bucks. Couldn't resist the deal. From what I have researched, AO Precision is good stuff. They supply a lot of well known brand names and military contracts.

I got the XM16E1 stripped in grey x2 its the slab side that lets you use the captive front pin, had the same weird issue yesterday ordering a quad rail handguard for another project I have on the back burner

Looks like Windham Weaponry is jumping on the retro bandwagon too. These are also sold out, lol. Windham's isn't a faithful reproduction though. They are using a black finished C7 upper, like on my midlength build (so it has the brass deflector), a government A2 profile barrel and from what I can tell they are using one of their standard A2 lowers. They have the triangle handguards and A1 grip and stock though.

The moding continues....Found myself wanting to do a barrel change with the midlength retro (I know I mentioned thinking about selling it before but Corgi's are fickle birds). As of now it has a Ballistic Advantage nitride 1/7 target crown bbl. Great bbl but pretty plain. I, in my infinite bordem, have opted for a 16" light weight phosphate and chrome lined bbl from Del-Ton. This bbl will actually give a similar profile to the A1 pencil bbl's. Since it's a fixed mag build, I'll put a three prong flash hider on it.
My current fsb will fit, so it will just be a swap. This should look pretty cool.
