And actually, from a later generation some of the IDF carbines are very cool. Dont have a pic handy.

Dude, twenty inch barrels are like a unicorn these days. I've been looking, because I look when I have nothing better to do and it's super hard to find in stock twenty inch barrels. Specifically chrome lined and in the A1 pencil profile. At least in the under $300 market. Brownells has their BRN605 barrel assembly in stock (like the one Elwood bought, but just the barrel, FSB and barrel nut/slip ring), which could make a cool build but it wouldn't be rifle length and I'd have to pin and weld a muzzle device just to make the barrel legal per the NFA, nevermind NYS laws. I found what looks to be a decent barrel from Green Mountain Rifle Barrel Co. but it is an A2 Gov't profile, so not the pencil barrel and it's also in a 1/8 twist. I am okay with the 1/8 twist but would an A2 government profile barrel look okay on a retro build? I also have a line on a period accurate stripped barrel in the pencil profile and 1/12 twist but that barrel is $30+ more than the Green Mountain barrel. I know it's really up to me and all. I want to build something retro but I also don't want it to be antiquated. It needs to be useful. First world problems, I know.

In my opinion, if all you can find is A2 profile and it works go with it, most people wouldn’t spot that it’s not period perfect, as a bonus the 1/8 twist will give you better stability with the 62 grain and heavier projectiles.

Front sight base is all set up. Just waiting on the hand guard and triangle end cap. Hesitant to time the barrel nut without the end cap because that front sight base is real snug. I sanded down the inside of the rings and will likely use some kroil to help get it on the barrel all the way. It's the right size (.750), the tolerance is just real tight.

Having a tough time finding A1 rear sight adjustment tools. Brownell's has a couple, but a lot of places don't carry them or they did but the part is now discontinued. Like these things just evaporated.
This place looks promising but there is nothing about their status with Covid: Sight Tool - M16A1 / AR-15 / SP1
I'll have to email them.

I agree with this particularly if it's going into a triangle handguard and you're throwing an FSB block on it. Anybody that would criticize it would be a retro elitist douchenozzle, anyway.

I'm sure some of you will like this combo better. Here is the build with the A1 stock. It's better than the A2 for sure. Looks more balanced, but I still don't know if I like it more.

I put the entry stock back on. I'm just not a fan of the A1 stock on this build. It has to do with the size difference between the handguard and the stock. the A2 and even the A1 are just too much stock. I have on the other hand, ordered what I should have in the first place, a stock extender from Choate. Choate Extended Recoil Pad AR-15 Composite Black
I think it is what I was looking for all along. It will add an 1 1/4" to the stock. It isn't the most AR looking stock extender, but....
The A1 stock will simply go on the rifle build I hope to do soon.

On that note the A1 receiver set I ordered should be in Monday. Looking to pick it up Tuesday. It's a grey finish...I'm pumped to see how it looks.

I have to say. This retro building has had me all kinds of interested in that period of our nation's history. The Vietnam war, cold war, space race, civil rights movement, Etc., Etc... So much going on.

The Choate buttstock extender arrived. It's solid composite so not a pad at all. I like the length it adds. This looks right to me. Not too much of a fan of the curve for the shoulder. It's not very AR like, but nothing some modification wouldn't fix. The other negative is that it doesn't quite match up to the size of the stock. There is a slight lip as the extender is just smaller. Again, nothing that can't be fixed. Installed the front sling swivel and from what I read, the OD green nylon M1 type sling is what was likely to be found. I happened to have one on hand.

My A1 receiver set arrived, so I'll be picking it up tomorrow. I also sprang for the Green Mountain 20" 1/8 button rifled, chrome lined barrel. It's an A2 government profile, not the A1 pencil barrel, but will still look good. Plus most of what I have read about Green Mountain barrels has been good.
This whole thing has been quite the splurge.

@Elwood, how grey in comparison is the upper receiver on your 605 to the black furniture? You can sort of see it in the pic you posted, but photos can be deceiving.
