Yes but then you have the small chance of over inserting during a reload or something inducing a malfunction

Please since you are the small arms guru? Why aren't agencies that carry G19s running them with G17 mags? Or glocks new 24 round mags?
But agencies that run G17s are in some cases allowing officers to use + base pads?
Or when Glock offered up the 19x why did they do so with base pads for extended ammo capacity instead of just giving them 24 rounders or 33 rounders?

Some police chiefs don't want modifications because they just don't want modifications. Some even prohibit stippling. Some allow it. Some even allow their cops to use their Glock 19 mags on their authorized Glock 26 off duty carry for reloads.
You can use a sleeve to prevent that off chance of failure if you are afraid. Since you're afraid of a 1% chance of some nonsense happening, why aren't You aren't afraid of the off chance that holes in your slide might introduce debris?
Glock just tweaks what they already have for sales. I bet it's extremely rare for some police officer who is issued a Glock 19 to say damn, " I sure wish I had another two rounds in that magazine that pushes against my car seat because I don't carry spares."
Anyway, this back and forth is getting old. It was fun when we started it. It has ran it's course.

There is really no need for separate model numbers for each caliber.
Separate calibers is really the only time they need new numbers.
