It was definitely hit. The amount of vacuum required to kill an animal like that would prevent the bullet from traveling more than 100 yds (SWAGing this one, I would have to do way more math than I want to in order to determine for sure). Regardless, the ballistic coefficient of the bullet is nowhere near "deadly vacuum" level.
It's also ridiculously unethical to take head shots at deer. The target is way too small and it's way too easy to maim the deer rather than kill it, even when using a BMG.
Secondly, why the fuck would you use a BMG on a deer? Yeah, I get the "because I can", but christ almighty, you might as well use an RPG.

If 50 bmg near misses could do that damage wouldn't there be reports from military sources referencing combat casualties caused by near misses? Prior to explosive shells,I believe that solid shot i.e. cannonballs from cannons did cause limb amputations , decapitations and broken bones. I think a 50 bmg near miss is not forceful enough to suck out eyeballs or whatever. Just saying.

I don't believe any of this sonic wave/ vacuum nonsense. The bullet is going at less than 3000 fps. It's physically impossible. If that were the case, a head shot miss from a 55 grain .223 going at well over 3000 fps would knock you out too.

what you don't see in the video is he loaded a blank in the 50 and his buddy off to the right was shooting a 300 Remington Ultra Magnum and that is what killed the deer.

I seem to remember a video from Iraq, maybe Afghanistan where to dicks were behind a low wall and A guy fired just over them and took them out. I could be wrong.

It was either an exploding round or it hit the wall and the debris took them out. I don't think exploding rounds ever made the big stage so I'm gonna go with the wall debris.

I'll have to do some shockwave experiments with my Barrett M99, though at $3.50 shot it gets expensive. I can't imagine carrying it very far for hunting. The guy is correct in the video regarding hearing protection.

I doubt the "shockwave" from passing 16" naval artillery shells has any effect on anything let alone the .50 BMG. The mythical status of the .50 has always amused me considering it is actually quite limited in what it can effect in battle.

But some here believe it just like they believe buckshot will lift you off your feet if shot in the chest and the sheer mass of a .230 grain projectile will spin you like a top if hit in the shoulder.

I get a kick out of the movies too, where the .44 magnum lifts the guy off his feet and pastes him against the wall. I guess these writers never heard of Isaac Newton. If they had they would know that if the victim reacted to the force of the bullet in such a way, the shooter would have reacted in a similar way in the opposite direction.

The above video is a bit useless IMO. It was inconclusive in terms of ballistics and forensics analysis.
Pretty unprofessional in terms of the layout and the actual analysis.
This insurgent also experienced the power of the 50 caliber.

It can happen that with large caliber high speed rounds have so much momentum in the higher speed
spectrum that you need a fairly large mass to activate them. In any case there is lot of fluid displaced
resulting in most likely in instant comma and death due to the disruption on the CNS.
But one can shoot a small turkey with a 375 H&H magnum designed for large game including African
game and have most meat undamaged due to the small section.
Pretty unprofessional in terms of the layout and the actual analysis.

Never mind the deer and the 50bmg. I'm going to question the shooters mental stability. You wanted to blow the head off an animal. That's doesn't fall into sporting, you've moved into a level of sick, it's mutilation, and your getting off on it. not too dissimilar to what sociopaths do with small animals before moving onto people.

Thought I hit it good and went after it and saw it 40 yards away doing sumersaults.. flipping all over. Walked up 5 feet away and looked like it was convulsing.
Put one in the neck to put it out.
Now here is the unbeleiveable part. I missed it in front of the shoulder and saw the scrape of the round in front of the shoulder, under the neck.
When I gut it, the lungs were all bruised up and filled with blood. So I truly beleive the shockwave would have killed it even i hadnt put the neck shot in.
