Do you carry in a bar or restaurant?

As everyone probably knows, NY is actually one of the states that does not make it illegal to carry a gun into a bar or while drinking. When you are going out to get a few drinks do you carry? Do you abide by "guns and alcohol don't mix" strictly, or do you trust yourself to be responsible with it and take responsibility for your safety regardless of where you're going? I thought it'd be interesting to get peoples opinions on the matter.

I know a lot of people, several of them cops, who carry when they stop for some drinks. I myself carry when I go out mostly because I usually Uber and don't want to be in some strangers car without my firearm. I'm not talking about getting blind drunk here, just going for casual drinks, or dinner and drinks etc. I understand if involved in a shooting your BAC could come into play, but I believe if you were absolutely justified it won't change the outcome and the facts and circumstances. While not ideal, I would rather have it and not need it, then need it and not have it. Why should I be killed by a lunatic with a gun or who knows what else just because I'm having a beer?

I do. I will not be a helpless victim. I carry when just having one drink or many. I have been for years even before the Orlando nightclub shooting. As far as having a BAC over whatever, I really would not care what my BAC was if some dude decided to shoot up the place.

As with anything you have to be smart about it. The gun is just for that. It’s not for an argument.

Always carry. Don't drink much anymore, and if I do it's normally 3-4 or less in a night. On the rare occasions that I know I will drink really heavily I take the gun off.

Applying for the permit I even wrote I would be carrying in bars as a working musician. Judge had no problem with that.

The licensing officer in our county enjoys beer, much like myself and Justice Kavanaugh. I know the L.O. in the county to our north issues a letter saying carrying in bars is prohibited.

It doesn't effect you even if you were to carry up there as you go by the rules of your L.O. not theirs.

20 plus years ago, I would drink and be armed. Even drunk at times. The gun never came out it’s holster or into view of anyone. I knew a few cops who got drunk and did some stupid things but most of us didn’t have any problem with alcohol AND the firearm. Just alcohol but not a problem with the firearm. But some people did get stupid with the gun so...

I don’t think it should be illegal. It’s not Ion the numbers like drunk driving or that most drunk gun carriers even touch their guns. Maybe just make illegal the use of the firearm while drunk but illegal at bar altogether just sets more people up to be robbed. Especially bars.

If I'm awake, I have a gun. When I sleep, gun is less than a foot away. Watching TV in my home, armed. Cutting the grass, armed. At the gym, armed.

At a bar, armed. I rarely drink though.

If I can absolutely not allowed to be somewhere armed, I do not go!

I do, granted I am not spending nearly as much time at the bars these days as I used to, actually in the last year year and a half I think I've gone to a bar once..

But I am always shocked by the response people give me when they hear that I carry at a bar. Granted if my goal is to get drunk then no I wont carry.

Was having this conversation with a good friend.. i told him if going out with friends there should be the "designated carrier" one person in the group who isnt drinking (moderation is key) and they are the one carrying, they can also double as everyone's ride home.

Yes, not only do I carry every day, even in Bars and restaurants, once inside I can tell you where the exits are within 90 seconds. And, my wife knows I will NOT sit with my back to any door, including the kitchen doors.

I carry everywhere I can. I don't drink when I have to drive. I will have one or two if out with friends and not driving. If I'm out with the boys and I'll probably drink more than I should, I leave the gun in the safe at home.

Yup, and I'm extra careful to make sure I don't drink as much when I do. I'm short and I like to talk a lot when I drink, which can rub people the wrong way. Not saying I would ever pull a gun out in an argument, but I don't want that to be part of the equation. I like to enjoy myself. When I am carrying, I understand the responsibility weighs more than a good time.

I'm the same way. When I started carrying people started wondering why I never did shots with them anymore. A few of my real close friends picked up on why pretty quick when I would give them a look. Plus you feel a whole lot better the next morning!

Yes I do. I rarely go out to a bar anymore. If I do I usually only have one or two drinks while I’m there. If I feel like drinking more than that I’ll do it at home.

If I go to a reunion with guys I haven’t seen in years, maybe a shot or two. But my heavy pounding days are reserved for a cruise ( can’t carry anyway) or a vacation where I’m not driving at all, nor carrying .Those are the rare occasions. A wedding, I’m counting my beers. For every beer is one more hour I stay before driving anywhere. I’m usually armed. And with my weight, it takes a lot before I’m legally intox. I weigh a lot.

Fortunately (or not) Beer in a Restaurant is far too expensive for me to justify more than two.

AND I usually carry a small breathalizer, just to protect myself - and everyone else.

If I have to drive, I don't drink... at all. I had a close encounter one time coming home at 2am after a Five Finger Death Punch concert. Got pulled over in the town I work in. I had been drinking. I definitely wasn't drunk, but certainly wasn't below .08. Not worth losing everything for a few beers. I'll carry and leave a bar with no worries now. Admittedly it's not as much fun though.

Im pretty sure in ny its not illegal to carry in a bar as long as youre not consuming alochol...I may be wrong tho.

There is no law about consuming alcohol that I've seen.

The only ONLY time I've seen any laws regarding alcohol consumption and guns is a hunting law

You used to be able to have a BAC of up to .10 while hunting, it has recently been changed to .08
