since I'm getting a little long in the tooth I've been getting a little deef! I have been using a pair of Beretta electronic muffs they seem to work well but I'm looking to up grade. any suggestions!

They have good reviews as do the Walkers Razor electronic muffs.

I was considering the Howard Leight's a while back, but I often go to the range alone & don't need the electronic ear muffs.
As I get older, I realize my hearing has deteriorated. I' ve come to realize how much it would suck to be deaf.
Therefore I double up on my hearing protection... I wear a pair of Surefire Ep5 and a pair of 34db ear muffs.
I would look for the highest db ear muffs to protect your hearing.
But if your attending a training class, competition or need to hear the instructor, the electronic ear muff's might be better.
(shooters use to get by just fine with the regular ear muffs before the electronic one's came along. I guess I'm just old fashion. )

You can't look cool with yellow foam bits sticking out your ears.
Electronic muffs will up your stature, doesn't matter if you can't shoot worth a darn or not.

I just got the peltor tactical 300 electronics. Ill let you know how well they work next time i go shooting.
I also bought the Peltor Sport 300s. I didn't need or want the Bluetooth capability that the $50 more 500s have. Instead I invested that extra money in the gel ear cups. For any kind of training class electronic muffs that dampen the sound of gunfire while at the same time amplifying other sound, such as voices, are extremely handy, perhaps even essential. I also find it extremely convenient on the range.
As for the Peltors, I like them a lot, with the gel ear cups they are very comfortable and they seem to offer plenty of protection on their own for outdoor use. They also seem to be the cheapest models available that compress, rather than clip, sound above 85db. This means that they muffle all sound over 85db but do not cut out any sound under that limit, you can hear anyone talking above loud noise very clearly. With cheaper muffs that clip, all sound is muffled whenever there is a loud noise. The sound amplification is quite pronounced as well, it was super easy to hear instruction regardless of what noise there was in the background during my training class.
I think the Peltors are a good option if you don't want to drop the really huge bucks on something like MSA Sordins.

I have the Howard Leight ear muffs, have had them for awhile. They are thin. They work but dont offer the best protection in the world. What has saved me, at least while I'm hunting, is linear muzzle brakes on almost all my guns. Only guns that dont have them are my rimfires (.22lr/17hmr). They are the Kaw Valley ones from Joe Bob Outfitters,,,,they work really well to project the sound forward.
@GTN and @Exonautic, those are indeed exactly the ones I have.

Well absurdly expensive for ear cups is about right.
Are they super rigid? If thats the case I'd think they actually hurt the db rating at first until you get a nice seal to your skull.
No, they are exremely squishy and soft. They seal around eye pro well. Despite the high cost I think they are worth it.

I haven't had the chance to use these muffs at the range yet so after a full day of wearing them ill see if i agree with pod and need to order myself a pair.
For an hour or two I suspect the stock cups will be fine. I wear the muffs for 8 hours at a time though and the extra comfort is much appreciated.
They should charge just a bit more and make the gel ones standard.

I have both, I had the Howard Leight first, then the Walkers Razor Slim went on sale for cheaper than the Howard's a year ago, and were reviewed slightly higher so I picked them up. The Walkers seem to have a higher-quality microphone and faster processor so work better for multiple shots at a time. The Howards also had more 'static' while using. If you're moving, shooting, or on a busy range you won't notice, but you will if you're alone and standing still. You can reduce this somewhat by lowering the volume. Zero static from the Walkers. I've used both in training classes, and the Walkers were somewhat more comfortable for me, but I still get pinched while wearing eye-pro. See a link to Kickstarter below.. (obviously not on the market yet, and I think after the campaign the price will be similar)
Even if you're on a range alone, using electronic ear pro is handy because you can hear other people and cars approaching. Not much makes me more nervous than walking down 100+ yards to set up a target and leaving my stuff on the bench. With the electronic ears I can hear people approaching and head on back to my stuff. Remember, it's not paranoia if they're really after you...

I use these Howard Leights.
They are bulky but have a better than average NRR 30DB.

The biggest complaint about Howard Leights, they don't fit well a lot of people. It depends on the shape of your ears. If they don't fit, it becomes painful to wear them for extended period of time. Peltor brand fits more people. My favorite is shotgunner's model, it doesn't interfere with the stock weld for rifle shooting. For pistol shooters there are more choices. I shoot with plugs and muffs and use plugs only when standing near shooting noise.

The doctor said I have "hearing like a dog", 100% in both ears. He sees that in children, not 46 year old dudes who have been in bands for 30 years.
True story, every single night I have to put the clock hanging in our livingroom in the closet.
The clock hangs about 20 feet from my bed but the ticking bothers the crap out of me. The GF insists on keeping the clock where it is. Nobody else can even hear it.
Anyways, figure out what decibel level is appropriate for you and find ear protection that is appropriate.
