So, I have had a NY pistol permit for the past 40 years and have been living between NY and VT for the past 15 years (own property in both states). I have recently moved back to NY indefinitely to be near a dying parent and was recently informed by a friend in town that NY permits now need to be renewed every 5 years. So I decided to go to the local sheriff department yesterday to inquire about this. They asked to see my permit and then called some higher up. After standing there waiting for about 15 minutes, the clerk comes out and tells me that my permit has now been officially revoked for failing to renew the permit by the deadline (a couple of weeks ago) and that I would need to surrender ALL of my guns to the sheriff's department within the next 72 hours (or else police would come to my house to confiscate them). I left the station and promptly transferred all of my firearms in my NY house (only about 20% of my collection) to my home in VT. What should I do/say when/if police come to my home. I no longer even have a NY state driver's license, and the address they have on file isn't even the one I have lived at for the past 20 years so I'm not sure if they would even be able to find my home for that matter. I am honestly trying to figure out whether this whole thing is just a bluff to get people to voluntary surrender their firearms, or if they have actually gotten to the point that they will now track down law-abiding citizens and try to strip them of their rights. Anyone have any advice on this?
