So, I'm having an internal debate on what I want my next firearm to be. One thing I'm sorely lacking is a 1911. If you were to pick up a "cheaper" 1911, what would you suggest. Say the limit is about $1k.

I really like my Kimber Pro Carry II...Although I wouldn't really call it entry level. Out of my pistols, it's the most accurate and fun to shoot, and it's made in NY! You could probably find one within your budget.

Kimber makes some pretty good shit. I don't like the idea of an "entry level" or cheap 1911 though. Sounds like it wouldn't hold up. Then again, I'm not that knowledgeable on everything
$1k should get an alright 1911. It won't be top of the line, but it should hold up and be reliable. It will probably end up being a range gun.

A grand will indeed get you A lot of gun. Ruger SR1911 well under. Springfield Armory, great 1911's under a grand. Both are great.

SIG Scorpion is good I hear. I have a seventies vintage Springfield A1 that I used to carry daily, also a Colt 1990 Officers Model. For a time both were everyday carry guns. Both pretty much retired now, other than some odd carrying here and there. I would like a new full size 1911 myself. In addition to the Scorpion, I was looking at the stainless Remington.

I own three different Springfields in .45. Love them all. My wife will be be a Range Officer 5" in 9mm, my sister has the same model. A bit above plain Jane and well priced.
I've had a few different 1911's along the way. Nowadays I'm partial to stainless steel guns. I have two at present, and I love them both: a Remington R1S (not the enhanced one), and a Colt Commander. The R1S new was around $700.00, and the Colt used in pristine shape was about $500.00 as I recall.
I have seen lightly used R1S's for $500.00. Ruger's 1911 looks nice too.

I have an EMP 9mm and am having a hard time deciding on another 9mm 1911. My heart wants a Dan Wesson Guardian but my wallet says the new Ruger.

Another vote for the Ruger SR1911. I also own a Colt Gold Cup National Match, two Dan Wesson Valors (one a VBob), and the gun I shoot the most is the SR1911. Love that gun.

Rock island 1911. Great starter so far for me.
Alot of what I have to say on this I'm kind of mostly copying word for word of stuff I've posted online before.
The real entry level ones, like Rock Island and such, I don't have enough experience with them to talk much about.
I see the Ruger models get a lot of recommendation this past year or so but I honestly just don't see it. The prices are decent for what they are, but I feel like there are just simply better made 1911 models from other companies in the price range. I will say that I haven't heard many problems at all with them, so that's a plus, but the Rugers to me are just a bit lacking in some features and overall fit and finish. Price-wise you can easily make a direct comparison between the SR1911 and Remington's R1 Enhanced and in my inspections of both I find the Remington to be the higher quality build, better stock trigger, etc. That said, I've also heard of more problems with the Remington guns so that makes for sort of a toss up between the two for me. The SR1911s are not at all bad, just perhaps not the BEST for the money in my personal opinion.
For a tiny bit more money (as little as $50 or so I think, maybe less ?) you can step up to certain Springfield models or perhaps an S&W E-series which I feel are both significantly superior 1911s to the Ruger offering. I'd also include some SIG models in that 'higher' notch, but I've also found them to have.. not really quality control issues but more like variance in tolerances even on the same models. This of course can be found in S&Ws and really all other models as well though.
Of all of them I've mentioned, I believe Springfield to probably be the best guns in terms of real 'workhorses' in the sub $1k range, but it's hard to beat SIG and S&W E-series in features you get for the money right now.
It's a tough call though with the market with so many offerings from so many makers.

Do yourself a favor and check out CZs 1911. I purchased one a few months ago and it is really well made and extremely accurate and reliable. I also own a Dan Wesson Valor, and Colt LW commander. Cz is right up there and only about 600 bucks.
