Like 10 years ago I found a little shack in the woods that was made out of a couple small pieces of plywood and 2X4s with a blanket and empty box of rubbers inside lol. And when I say little shack, I was like 14 when I found it, and I could barely fit in it. I've also found a couple of old broken alcohol bottles with the XXX's on them which was really cool,a ghetto water bong made from an ocean spray cranberry juice bottle and some tin foil, and an old microwave. That's about it though. I miss exploring the woods.

We have a huge briar patch at the back of our property. Last summer I decided to get in there, cut all the bases, drag the huge bundle out into the yard, and burn it.
Deep inside, I found a, "nest", of sorts. Someone had been living there. I found remnants of a few campfires, so it wasn't an animal. I found a few turkey and chicken carcasses, as well as a huge ham bone I had made a pea soup out of. I recognized it. It was from our garbage.
Someone had been living in our yard, and living on our garbage.
I burned it all so my wife and kids wouldn't know about it and worry. The thought of all the times I went to work at night, leaving my wife and kids home alone haunts me to this day. It also explains the occasional whiff of wood smoke we'd catch once in a while.
No paths too and from.
Never a sign of another person back there.
Neighbors never saw anyone back there.
Walk your property frequently.

Another one. This is from camping at a state park.
Last fall, our last camping trip of the season. Meacham Lake SP up near Paul Smith's. Sight 161. First two nights were uneventful. Beautiful weather, stunning sunset, all is well. One of our sons decided to come out, bring his tent and bag, and spend the last night with us.
10-ish, cool clear night, fire's going out, (used up the last of the wood), so we all crash. Him in his tent, wife and I in the Aspen Classic motorcycle camper, which is a small trailer with a pop-up tent on it.
2:00 in the morning, and all hell breaks loose! The only way to describe what we heard was a screaming Indian woman. It was three double-syllable words, followed by a single, nasal word. It's the only way I can describe it. The eery, halting speech reminded me of the scene in the Outlaw Josie Wales when the squaw he picked up at the trading post was frantically telling Clint Eastwood and the older Indian what had happened to her. Lots of gutteral vowel sounds.
I mean SCREAMED!
It was instantaneously un-nerving. Paralyzing. My first reaction was to tuck my legs up into a fetal position inside my bag, and cover my head for the attack. Remembering my wife and child were here also, I sprang up, grabbed the flashlight, and ran THROUGH the zipped door, nearly taking the whole camper with me. I run directly into my son, who was wearing his sleeping bag like a hoodie. He was crying. He's 23. He heard it to, and was running for mom & dad. He had wet himself.
We fell back into the tent, holding a lawn chair in front of us to fend off whatever had screamed at us. We both fall back on the bed, (more precisely we had both jumped backwards), which woke my wife. She had slept through it, (which didn't surprise me as she's a very sound Sleeper). The whole thing lasted maybe 15 seconds from the scream to us huddling on the bed.
We spent the rest of the night awake and ready for that blood curdling scream to happen again, but it never did. We've talked about it a few times, searched YouTube for unusual animal or owl sounds at night. Even thought maybe we had heard a mountain lion with a mouthful of dying rabbit, or a close up pair of coys mating.
This sound came from a human throat.
This sound was SPEECH.
I hope I never hear it again.

Don't know what you heard, but Male cats of every species can make a variety of haunting and eerily human like sounds when they are on the prowl. Down right creepy sounds.

Was it like this? Play the second audio, the one of the Eastern Screech Owl but turn up the sound to the maximum for the full effect: Nocturnal Animal Sounds of New York State. Damn if those sounds do not seem hauntingly human-like. If not the Eastern Screech Owl then try the red fox and the bobcat. Also give a listen to the coyote, go beyond the initial howling and keep listening until the narrator chimes in because it pauses with no sound a few times and then continues. Although they do howl, Coyotes are much more likely to make yelps and other noises as opposed to howling; I say that based on my experience, of 4 years in the Border Patrol in southern CA, hearing to them hundreds if not thousands of times. Sometimes the noises they make are downright eerie. Oh yeah, don't forget to listen to the cottontail rabbit too. Sounds like it got caught by some critter intent on devouring it. The woods may be lovely, dark and deep but they sure can be filled with scary sounds at night.

Some of those are similar, but not it. This was speech, of a sort. You could recognize human intonation. This came from a person. It was like somebody yelling, "GET THE HELL OUTA MY YARD!", or some other similar thing. We felt like we were being yelled at, that whatever it was, was mad at us for being there.
If we had heard it again, we would have fled. We spent the rest of the night listening, wide awake. When the sun started coming up, and we could start to look around a little, we started to relax a bit.
I've seen, smelled, and heard combat. I know the smell of fear, and we all stank of it. This was visceral fear from flop sweat, like you get right after avoiding a major accident.
My point is, I don't scare easy.
I was absolutely terrified.
We've booked another few days there this summer through reserveamerica. It's not the same sight, but I'm bringing a decent recorder and a couple GoPro's. If it happens again, I'll get it.

Robin, I've heard big cats out in Colorado and you're right, those sound creepy AF. Same for a real wolf. Heard them in Denali while tent camping when I was young, and there is NOTHING quiet so primal as the deep, low, long howl of a large, full grown wolf. Especially when you know the only thing between you and him is a mile of open woods and some nylon!
Kudos to the caveman who first tamed one. That's one ballsy MF!
Didn't mean to dominate the thread so much with this. Back to physical things found in the woods.....
We were looking at 10 acres out near Saranac to build a log home, (before my wife talked me into buying existing in town). While walking the boundary, we came across a 6' long, two handle crosscut saw, still in the tree! Didn't mention it to the real estate agent that was with us, and went back the next day to get it. Took a little chopping to get it out, but I got it!
Makes you wonder about the circumstances that would force two old timers to run off and leave it. (Looked around, didn't find any skeletons!)

The most dangerous thing in the woods out here in Washington State is the Meth Camp where they make meth. They are well armed and are on the loony side. There have been people killied by these people in these meth camps.

Many moons ago as a pup I was invited to do a little off shore fishing in Florida. The guy asked me if I had a semi auto rifle. I replied that I had a Mini 14 and he said load up as many mags as you have and bring it. I thought we were going shooting AND fishing. He said "I hope not." He was worried about running into drug smugglers. He kept a very watchful eye on the radar. Many years later I befriended a retired army colonel with a big boat who liked to throw parties on it. He wanted someone to captain it while he got smashed. While we were out checking my boating skills he went below and returned with a garbage bag of empty milk jugs, an M1A and a bunch of loaded mags. He put the boat into a big circle and started tossing out the jugs. I rocked a 20 rounder in an started blasting at the jugs, missing most of them but not by much. "Close enough for gov't standards, ya got the job" says him. He turned the wheel over to me, grabbed the M1A and proceeded to sink "em all! Every time I "ran the party boat" he looped a lanyard around my neck with the key to "the locker." 3 M1A s and a bunch of loaded mags. He'd say "Watch for pirates!" (smugglers) I never saw any boats up close but that big Furuno radar could spot things moving really fast miles away

I don't think so much anymore. With the increased presence of Coast Guard, Border Patrol, and others it's not as bad as it used to be. But last time I was there a friend of mine still was still taking his folding KelTec SU16 with him. I guess it's like a fire extinguisher.
