Brass prep, in my opinion, is a pain in the ass. I've reloaded .223 for practice and competition at all levels. I started out doing the brass prep myself and it didn't take long before I said fuck this. I found a guy in WV who does full brass preparation. He's one of the top shooters in the country and knows his stuff. Last I saw for .223 he was getting $.045 per round (commercial or military) with a minimum of 2K rounds per order (he also does .308). Case prep includes:
Tumbled to high polish
Sized to SAAMI specs
Primer pockets cleaned
Flash hole deburred
Trimmed to standard specs
Case necks deburred and chamfered
Military crimp removed (swaged)
Cases are head spaced on a per customer basis using customer provided factory spent brass.
USPS priority mail flat rate shipping both ways. When it comes back it is gorgeous. Sit in the chair and prime away and yer ready for powder and press. I've loaded tons of this (mainly 69, 77, and 80gr. for competition and 55gr for the pistols).
Factoring in the cost of the brass prep tools, my time, etc., well worth it to me.

Is Varget a ball powder? I was thinking of using it in my 7mm-08, and I like smooth dispensing from a powder measure.
I don't disagree with you but for me I like to drink and work at the bench. So to me I do brass prep all winter long. Now I will admit I probably don't shoot as much rifle as you alluded to.

For .223 I use nothing but Hodgdon Varget. I know it as commonly called "stick" powder. Love it...

I would love to write a long list of things but I think that most of what you need to do is already in the
reloading section in a sticky.
Safety first so understanding the safety measures and how to keep everything organized ahead of time
and also read some materials regarding all steps from brass selection and preparation to bullet seating and crimping
and how to get a consistent final round.
Make a check list and put it in front of you right above the press. Leave the powder canister out in front of the
charging station or press so you know what powder is in the thrower. Do not mix canisters and take your time.
There are 3 main rules that one should follow all the time and then you should be fine:
1. Measure
2. Measure again
3 when done with the above then verify and measure a bit more.
Assume nothing.
You will be fine. 223 is a forgiving caliber and excellent round to start reloading rifle. You will be grouping like crazy
in no time.

@Wildman1024 I forgot from all the garbage in YouTube there is something of value so check out a guy that goes by ammosmith or somethign like that.
He has very good close ups of things and will give some tips even to the most expert reloaders including wildcatters and guys into brass forming like I do.

So...I am working on setting up my case trimmer. Looks like case length for 223 should be 1.750 with a max OAL of 1.760. It's really hard to get it dialed in perfect. If I am at 1.49-1.51 that should be OK I assume? I'm not going for match grade stuff here.

see the case trim max length from your book .. under that a bit your still good.
i reload 270 win and its the same case as 30-06 just a different neck dia for the bullet .. so when i neck down a 30-06 to 270 win is way short
but it works and will take a few reloads to stretch the neck back out for trimming ..
watch your terminology OAL over all length that is loaded with bullet ..
COL and OAL are pretty much the same thing, one is just more specific than the other, but usually refer to the same measurement - Base of the case to the tip of your bullet.
1.750" or 1.760" is the min and max for trimming case length ..

So I have been doing a little reading around the web. Seems like unless the case is greater than 1.755, they do not trim it.
What would be the minimum usable case length? 1.73? 1.74?

@Wildman1024 I would reject any case under the min spec unless you know its good .. unlike the 30-06 to 270 conversion that i do which is a known process and works
