I grew up in the Adirondacks, recently a close friend of mine was hiking on a marked trail when he was confronted by a hunter claiming he was trespassing, he was yelling at my friend telling him to get the fuck off his property and even pointed his rifle at him and said "don't make me use this." Now whether or not he was trespassing is immaterial to me, this sounds wayyyyyy out of line. You don't point a weapon at an unarmed person. Period. Full stop. I'm not sure I would have reacted as calmly as my friend did.

Pointing a loaded weapon at someone requires the same justification as shooting them.
If this guy had been shot, you wouldn't be asking those questions.
Assuming the incident went down as reported (marked public trail), then the hiker would have been justified in using deadly force to defend himself (even if drawing a pistol on a drawn rifle is a tactically unsound practice, it would have been legally justified).

If youre friend is being truthful and not exaggerating then thats not legal behavior by the alleged land owner.
He told me about it yesterday during a short walk. I'll ask him where the next time we hike.
He did not. I did ask him why and he had a good point that the guy was in his 50's and white and had nothing else to go on. I would almost expect reckless behavior like that from someone younger but I was just shocked by the story. This is why I don't hike unarmed.

There are a lot of places in the Adks where DEC trails crisscross private lands. People wander off. There are indeed illegal grow sites in some areas. This story could be true, it could also be a “campfire tale” that is rooted in mythology and lore.

Honestly, if you'd relayed this story last month, and a story about a town in California that passed a resolution praising terrorists for kidnapping children, I would have found the second story less credible.

- I haven't talked to my friend in a few days, he didn't seem all that bothered by it. You'd have to know him to understand.
- Whether or not someone believes or doesn't believe is meaningless, when he told me while we were hiking the other day I was shocked and just wanted to share it somewhere. Here seemed appropriate. As far as him exaggerating or not; I've known him for 12 years, never known him to tell lies or inflate stories. He's as chill as they come.
- I had thought of recording it if I were there but judging by this idiot's irrational over the top behavior I'm not sure that would have been a good idea. The guy sounds like he is out of control already.
When I do get to talk to him again I'll ask where abouts he was if for no other reason than for others to take care when in the area.

The first step is getting out of the situation. As much as that crazy bastard deserves a blasting for pulling that shit, it's not worth attempting to fight or negotiate with an irrational person when you're at a disadvantage. Your main goal is self preservation. Once that is secure, then fuck them over given the chance.
When someone gets a gun in their hands they tend to go crazy. Especially fudds and hunters. It goes to their heads as if they're John Wayne or something. That's not to say they're all like that, but it tends to be the fudds IMO that have the biggest mouths and attitudes. The plinkers tend to keep their mouths shut and be less of a loose cannon.
