GOP takes deregulatory aim at hard-to-buy gun silencers

The federal government has strictly limited the sale of firearm silencers for as long as James Bond and big-screen gangsters have used them to discreetly shoot enemies between the eyes.

Now the gun industry, which for decades has complained about the restrictions, is pursuing new legislation to make silencers easier to buy, and a key backer is Donald Trump Jr., an avid hunter and the oldest son of the president-elect, who campaigned as a friend of the gun industry.

The legislation stalled in Congress last year. But with Republicans in charge of the House and Senate and the elder Trump moving into the White House, gun rights advocates are excited about its prospects this year.

They hope to position the bill the same way this time – not as a Second Amendment issue, but as a public-health effort to safeguard the eardrums of the nation’s 55 million gun owners. They even named it the Hearing Protection Act. It would end treating silencers as the same category as machine guns and grenades, thus eliminating a $200 tax and a nine-month approval process.

Running ain't losing. I want to see em lose, big time. I want reciprocity and suppressor reform. From there let's do away with this sbr/sbs nonsense, and the entire NFA if we can. With a conservative majority in the judiciary start cracking down on the ban states.

I understand what you're saying. I just mean that I don't think that anyone should have to have a CC permit or register their firearms.

I would also like to have a pretty, fluffy unicorn for a pet. However we might, instead, be able to get legal ccw status across the country if we focus on reality and petition our legislature to support reciprocity. Or we can do what we always do and pontificate on our soap box with our heads in the clouds about the way things ought to be as our rights continue to slip through our fingers. I want the means to defend myself any here in the country without facing the prospect of becoming a felon, and I want it now goddammit!

Im all for constitutional carry, but I am also a realist. if we start with the proper national reciprocity bill it can be a good stepping stone. we need to lay the ground work first. and as mentioned above, even if suppressors are removed from the nfa list and made legal to purchase like any long gun, nys will still likely not allow them, so WHAT is the fed going to do (if anything) to force liberal states like NY to allow us to own them?

Once it's demonstrated that being able to carry anywhere and silencers work and don't turn the country into the wild west with rampant assassins running around then you can work on NFA abolishment and national constitutional carry. Once a federal law (even though the constitution should be enough) you would actually have a very good case if (and when) NY tries to do things their own way.

Personally, rather than a law, I'd like to see the DOJ start suing states for their violations.

If we get National Reciprocity where every state's permits are valid in every other state, we will be set up for some interesting legal times. The proposed bill does nothing about may-issue states. So, citizens outside of: NY, NJ, MA, CT, CA, MD, and DE (?) would be able to legally carry with the permits that they were legally issued in their home jurisdictions. But...citizens in may-issue (read: almost never-issue) Leftist states would be denied such a right. This would be especially onerous when tourists from other states could legally carry in the Leftist states but law-abiding tax-paying citizens of those very states could not carry concealed where they live and pay taxes. That would appear to set the stage for an "equal protection" argument.
