Happened to be nothing.

But, realized using over and under 32 inch trap gun for home defense may be a little silly.

I know this topic is beaten to death.

In AR-15 illegal state we live in, can I safely assume

1) Semi-auto shotgun (ex. Benelli M4)
2) Pump action
3) <10 mag NY compliant AR-15

in terms of home defense purpose?

I can see pump action giving me trouble in the heat of the moment (especially not well lubricated)

I've seen friends' semi-auto that perform very well without cycling problem.

My double barrel is probably a bad choice.

AR-15 or any other semi-auto with <10 rounds... maybe not the best idea.

Thoughts?

My Mossberg is for hunting use only now. I have a number of 9mm handguns laying around, but if I thought there was a serious threat around my ar15 pistol goes with me. Some may scoff at this, because it's a fixed 10 Rd mag, but I have no problem with it and have a holstered pistol as secondary.

How 'bout a lever action in .357? An often overlooked option I think. Semi auto shotguns are limited to 5 rounds I believe while pumps are not, while even at only 10 rounds a 5.56/223 semiautomatic carbine is probably the most effective HD tool going.
I keep a 60 round drum in mine:p
Also the Ruger PC Carbine would be a good HD tool also. Get the Mlok free float version to make it easy to attach a light.

And another thing a double barrel 12 gauge is much, much better than nothing at all.

Have 2 ARs.

Featureless AR. Extra mags.

Semi auto 12 ga. shotgun (m2 better imo than m4. Lighter. Cheaper. Etc etc). I run a benelli but i would get a versamax next time.

Never a mossberg.

I waited too long, pretty much stuck here for the duration now. No matter, the cancer is slowly spreading everywhere else anyways.

The lever gun is a good option, but semi auto shotguns can have 7+1 per the unsafe act.

I'd take permanent hearing loss for that matter.

My preferred setup is AR9 and 9mm pistol though at the moment the inside long gun is a Mossberg 500 with #4 buckshot.

Since our thwarted home invasion, Electronic muffs are kept on each side of the bed. Amplified hearing and noise protection when needed in one nice little package. Extra pairs in all bedrooms for family /guests.

A pump action shotgun is your best defense. It makes a distinctive sound when racked. Imagine breaking into a house, its dark and you don't really know your way around. You hear a shotgun being wracked. The larger majority of criminals are going to hightail it out of there with piss running down their leg. Believe me, you never want to shoot someone if it can be avoided. Regardless of if you are in the right or not, the legal BS that follows is something no one wants to go through. In addition, a shotgun has a much better chance of hitting a target in low light environments than an AR or handgun. There is also less worry of penetrating a wall and hitting something on the other side.

Your HD needs a round in the chamber and a momentary weapons light to ID your target.


My preference is a pistol carbine or 5.56 carbine. Ruger pc is a good nys option. Reccomend something in the 147 grain neighborhood.

Your choice of course, but then your dealing with the fallout of having shot someone when there are better/other choices. Fudd? hardly. ARs and such are amazing guns for a variety of circumstances. In home defense, not really. Momentary weapon lights is a great way to give away your position. Now, if you have night vision gear and are training in close quarters clearing, maybe.

If the AR is limited to ten rounds I think a semi auto shotgun would be the best home defense gun.

Pumping can be a pain and apparently some short stroke in heat of the moment. A lever action would be worse, since it has to be shouldered to cycle a round without going off target.

Electronic muffs are a good idea if you think you’ll use them. My ears are so sensitive now I cannot even shoot an AR with ear plugs outside (!) without noticing it tweak one ear; I have to double up with muffs too.

Shooting pistols indoors (no ear pro) is a far cry from rifles like 556. I've done it. Shotguns are even more outrageous. If you ever want to get an idea of the differences go to a relatively small indoor range. Pistols are "meh". Rifles are "that's a little loud". Shotguns are "we're under attack!". That being said I've found a way to very comfortably shoot my AR indoors prolonged without ear pro (I've done it). IMG_20190911_102315_151.jpg

All my guns are loaded and ready to go.

IF i had a pump, it would not need to be pumped to “scare” off an intruder. He would have a split second to make a decision to leave as the safety was turned off.

That is all the warning you get if you are in my house uninvited.

I am not worried about the after affect with police and court. I have a lawyer. I will be the only one talking (if my lawyer says okay). No one else will be speaking except the DA.

There is another school of thought that if you really are under home invasion, not to use a suppressor. You want your neighborhood to hear gunshots and call police or help you.
