00 or 000 will have no problem over penetrating and passing through drywall.
4 buck is better for HD but there's still the possibility of over penetration.

True but still less than a .223. I hate it when the bullet passes through the den wall, then the living room wall, the kitchen wall (after punching a hole in the fridge), into the garage and the windshield I just replaced from the last time I shot the gun in the house.

Really? I always felt rifles were louder than shotgun. Shotgun rounds travel just over sound of speed but rifle rounds go like 2500fps. I always assumed they were louder.

Well it depends on which rifles and which shotguns. Of course a 22 rifle won't be nearly as loud as a 12 gauge. But here we were talking about 556 vs 12 gauge. We're also assuming that the barrel lengths are 16 and 18 inches respectively. 556 and 12 gauge number wise are actually pretty damn close. From the information I've seen they are 160 - 165 decibels. Some data shows the shotgun as 160 and the rifle as 165 and other data shows it reversed. But that 5 decibels is actually a big difference. From my experience in indoor ranges the 12 gauge was louder. You also have to take flash and concussion into account.
This is what I experienced at a (small) indoor range. A guy shooting in the bay next to me had a standard 16" AR. It was loud and it was concussive. A guy 2 or 3 bays down was shooting a standard 18" 12 gauge. When that went off it shook the place. The concussion could be felt in your chest and the flash was insane. This was with birdshot. Change barrel lengths and loads and of course you'll get different results but I think all things equal usings standard guns and ammo the 12 gauge will be louder.
While you do gotta do what you gotta remember exposure to any sound over 140db will cause instant, permanent damage to your hearing. Most all gunfire is well above 140db. There is something to be said for keeping a pair of electronic muffs beside your HD gun.

Sadly, for me anyway, I hear better with my electronic muff's than the naked ear. Now if they would improve the quality of tone I would wear them all the time, much cheaper than hearing aides.

I honestly think a pair of muffs would be faster to put on and get off.

If I'm going to be concerned about having to shoot someone in my house, I'm not taking the time to screw with ear muffs or plugs.
What if you have the time though? You wake up and hear someone kicking in the door but it's a sturdy door and they aren't getting right through, you have time to grab your rifle, call 911 and if they still aren't through why not put the muffs on? The electronic ones can amplify your hearing and give you greater situational awareness. If you don't have time, don't put em on. But if you do why not give yourself the option?
@Edwardteach72, the green on green looks pretty sharp huh? I switched furniture with the NYGF build so I can put a LaRue RISR on the CTR so I can get a better cheek weld for the scope.

I was on a tangent, wondering if the SureFire plugs are good for hunting (where I want to hear ambient sound but plug em up on sudden high decibel noise).
On point, YMMV. My main concern on my property is coyotes, not people. So outside, not inside. But putting my Walkers next to the bed might not be the worst idea in the world.

I envision myself focusing on gathering my family. Then threat assessment, target acquisition, dialing 911 and giving my command voice a workout. I don't see fumbling with muffs or plugs as being something I'd be willing to devote attention to at the time.
How long does it take to put on a pair of ear muffs? Less than a second. I don't want to be drawn into a argument over this, I just think its something to consider, an option to give yourself to take or leave as you need and that it wouldn't take any real time to use, so unless you have an intruder already inside why not have the option to improve and preserve your situational awareness? I guess it's very situational, I have no one but myself to keep track of and my door is quite sturdy despite appearances to the contrary. I know this because I tried kicking it in myself after having locked myself out. I couldn't do it so anyone trying to do so would make such a racket as to wake me in time to take the necessary measures.

There is one thing to consider if using a rifle indoors without hearing protection. You will not hear any other threats or commands. You won’t hear the back window glass being broken. You won’t hear the police behind you telling you to drop it. You won’t hear your kid screaming downstairs. For that reason I chose a pistol caliber carbine because when things happen fast, you will not have time to dawn hearing protection. It may be a only a second to put on, but if you hear a door kicked in or glass broken, you are already a second behind.
You think a PCC vs. Rifle caliber would make that difference? Hell, shooting a 9mm outside without hearing protection makes your hears ring. Mine at least.

I’ve actually tested it out. The PCC or pistol is loud. Very loud. But not as loud as a rifle indoors.
I say a PCC or a pump shotgun. There should be no problems whatsoever racking a shotgun even under stress, and "not well lubricated" shouldn't even be a consideration for the gun you are going to use for that purpose.

It’s enough to disorientate you. Don’t believe me. Go to an indoor range and take the stall against the wall. Fire 5 rounds consecutively. It’ll rattle you and that’s in a big room. In a hallway it’s worse. If you have a muzzle break, it’s even worse.O'rly?

Shooting long guns indoors with no hearing protection is loud enough to make you nauseous.

I actually felt ill to the stomach and had a bad headache the rest if the day. No idea how much moar deeffer it made me, and I was already a bit deef.

Pressures make all the difference compared to decibels. With decibels, they are mostly near each other. That’s why a muzzle breaked .223 will rattle your teeth compared to a pistol but both are within a few decibels of each other.

I've been thinking of buying these for a few years. I always get into research and can't quite pull the trigger on it.
I do hunt with ear electronic earmuffs--generally one ear coverd one not because they sound weird, and I am quick to put over both ears. I'm obsessive about ear protection now.
I cannot--I mean literally-- be at an indoor range with foam ear plugs (and I insert them very well) unless I also have ear muffs.
I've also shot a pistol outdoors without ear protection just one round to test it out and I had instant ringing and mild pain. Not one of my smartest behaviors.
I agree electronic ear muffs by the bed are not the worst idea.They do kind of reduce the sense about what's going on though.
