Buckshot will absolutely go right through several walls and hit your neighbors house. Yes, I saw this first hand. I won't devulge specifics.


The whole racking the slide thing might work on some teenagers...but on a hardened criminal, or someone on drugs, all you've done is give away your location with a weapon that has limited capacity and is hard to work one handed in case you are wounded. If it's that serious, I can operate a lightweight pcc one handed. It's also quick to reload, and I don't run the risk of short stroking under duress.

I agree electronic ear muffs by the bed are not the worst idea.They do kind of reduce the sense about what's going on though.

The more expensive ones that use dynamic compression will actually amplify sound below an 80db threshold. If I turn the volume all the way up on mine I can hear insects flying by from quite a distance so in an HD situation it could be an advantage.

Drilled with doning muffs from bed, it did not add to response time for off hour response. During a number of waking hour scenarios, the use of muffs may not make sense.

I have a friend that was the go to .50 gunner guy in Iraq. You have to shout at the top of your lungs for him to hear you. Now that is a. 50 BMG machinegun but it's also outdoors and that muzzle is quite a ways forward. Dump a 30 round mag from a 16" barrel in an enclosed space and you will suffer significant temporary hearing loss for more than just a few minutes.
It took two days before my hearing returned to normal after that mag dumping draco guy did his thing. It was so bad I sought medical attention. Fortunately while I did suffer some permanent hearing loss it was slight. Still the experience taught me the importance of having hearing protection. The 5.56 is a high pressure cartridge and it makes a lot of noise. And the more people are dubious the more I feel compelled to stress this- Keep some kind of hearing protection handy in proximity to your gun. You should have your firearm, a hand held light, a cell phone, a portable medkit and hearing protection all in a handy place. I keep everything in a divided plastic organizer tray on top of my nightstand. It doesn't take up much room at all and everything I would need is right there along with a pistol and either a rifle or shotgun. I also keep the kitchen light on overnight which provides enough light for me to see in my entire apartment. And I am surrounded by concrete walls so yes I do put the 308 Galil in the HD rotation. I'm pretty sure my brain would explode out my ears if I fired a 16" brakes 308 indoors without muffs on.

Most supersonic rifle ammo is still above the 140db limit or right near it so I wouldn't consider it hearing safe but it would certainly help. However you are adding length and weight to your gun in a situation where being as short and handy as possible is a serious advantage. I'd rather just run with the ear muffs and a 14.5" gun.

If you have others that live with you... That’s why I ask. When I move in 10 years, I’m getting a suppressor if it’s still legal. Would prefer to not have to run subsonic since that essentially turns a rifle round into a PCC.

Supersonic 300 blk from a short barrel + suppressor would probably be your ticket. It probably won't be hearing safe but you would likely avoid the worst of it.

A pump action shotgun is your best defense. It makes a distinctive sound when racked. Imagine breaking into a house, its dark and you don't really know your way around. You hear a shotgun being wracked. The larger majority of criminals are going to hightail it out of there with piss running down their leg. Believe me, you never want to shoot someone if it can be avoided. Regardless of if you are in the right or not, the legal BS that follows is something no one wants to go through. In addition, a shotgun has a much better chance of hitting a target in low light environments than an AR or handgun. There is also less worry of penetrating a wall and hitting something on the other side.

I have those $30-40 green ones that everyone loves on Amazon .They do amplify lower DB sounds but after a while it's still slightly disorienting when hunting.

There's no doubt at all that even a single .223 going off in a house is a terrible idea for one's hearing and IMO likely to add substantially to the long term damage we all have as the years pass. Just because the ringing may have disappeared after a bit doesn't mean there wasn't more damage.

The Peltor sport 300 or 500 models which run in the $100-$150 range or the quite a bit more expensive MSA Sordins have impressive performance with the sound compression. What I mean is that these models amplify sound (essentially letting that sound bypass the muffs protection) below 80db will seamlessly and simultaneously screening out louder noise.
In practical terms this means you can clearly hear conversation overtop of gunfire. The less expensive muffs use clipping which gives the effect of all sound clipping out during gunfire.
I found the Peltor 300s invaluable for training classes and it it's great on the range since I don't ever need to take them off if I need to talk with someone and I can hear others plainly even when others are shooting.

And for others, the temporary hearing impairment from a magazines worth of rifle fire in close quarters goes beyond just ringing. It is like being actually deaf, as in you see mouths moving but hear nothing. When it happened to me I was starting to freak out, I thought I had completely lost my hearing. Over the next few hours my hearing gradually returned to a point where I could function but it took about 2 days to get completely back to normal, or seemingly normal, subsequent testing showed some permanent high frequency loss, which represented a further shift down from fairly significant hearing loss from my service in the Artillery Corps. In the latter case it wasn't from gun/cannon/rocket fire but from repeated and extended exposure to the sound of a 758ci 2 stroke turbo diesel high idling at 2,000 rpm.
I have an extremely difficult time discerning high frequency sound when even low volume, low frequency sound is in the background and I have tinnitus also. If I am standing in the presence of an idling diesel truck I pretty much won't be able to understand a word you say unless you scream at me.

I really have no complaints although when streaming audio through cellular to them with a male <-> male jack I get bad interference. if I go to airplane mode they work great.

Electronic ear muffs are amazing and it's awesome we can get them for under $100. When I run the howards in concert with foam ear muffs I get huge db attenuation but at the same time can still hear ambient fairly well if the ear muffs are turned up. I assume these do the clipping you've mentioned, I'm not quite sure.

Oddly enough I was looking at these the other day for bird hunting. Good for that application you think?

For me, they muffle a bit of the ambient noise but I still hear it better than with earmuffs on. I get a sense of less noise isolation.
When I'm plinking and such, I can still follow casual conversation with the guys and I just leave them in until everybody is done shooting and they never interfere with my cheek weld on certain stocks.

Sure, but those are reserved for a small person in my house that needs to be able to hear and follow my directions.
I can still pop the EarPro's in/out in a few seconds. They have a slightly odd shape to fit the ear better but practice definitely helps.
Worst case scenario: I only get one in, I'm only deaf in the other ear.
