Hoping to finally get into competition 2018

Ever since I first applied for my handgun license back in i think 2012 i have been wanting to get into competition shooting.

Lot of things have stopped me from doing so
1 not having my license
2 time (working 40 hours plus full time school)
3 time (now working 3rd shift, generally 60 hours a week, plus the hour drive to work and hour drive home)
4 cost (Sadly I am an adult, and in a relationship soooo some fun stuff is moved to the backburner for "responsibilities")

With that being said i am honestly hoping to maybe get in a little competition shooting this year, nothing major and really just for fun, don't care if I place dead ass last.

So cool news is the club I belong to has a bunch of different competitions all year, even starting to look at 2 gun. Shitty part is i sold off a lot of my handgun. But currently have a chopped g19, a chopped G17 with agency arm's trigger (which is what I would most likely use) and my CZ P-07 (which I would prefer to use but limited mags and they are stupid expensive, plus I have an RMR milled on it so really limits when I can use it)

A club I belong to has IDPA type shoots and center fire bulls eye once a week each. I show up once in a while but some guys take it pretty seriously. It's a lot of fun.

We have 3 gun shoots. People without pistols can use a PPC in leau of a pistol.

Next match is this coming sunday.

We have a rifle match on jan. 1, 2018. That should fit your 2018 schedule pretty well.....

My club does a summer defensive pistol shoot biweekly. It's a ton of fun everyone tries their best but no one gets overly competitive. There are people running the course of fire in 30 seconds and some old timers coming in at the 2 minute mark. No one cares and everyone has fun. My suggestion is just go and do it, it's not as big of a deal or leap than you expect it will be.

@Edwardteach72 here's my advice based on many years of competition experience.

First, you might want to stick with just handgun competition to begin with. You might be better served to learn the ins & outs of 1 discipline before branching out to multi-gun. I say "keep it simple" and learn and enjoy handgun competition as your main focus for now.

You will find there are a lot more handgun only matches that you can shoot than multi-gun. Multi-gun will always be around and you can get into that sometime down the road once you've got the handgun part down pretty good.

Second, if I had just those 3 guns you mentioned to choose from I would go with the G-19. You already know you will need a bunch of magazines (5 or 6 probably) and if you go with the G-19 you should already have 4 -- two G-19's and two G-17's which will work in the 19. So you would only need to pick up a couple more.

The #1 piece of advice I give new competitors is DO NOT spend a lot of money on guns & gear right off the bat. Shoot what you have until you reach a point where that equipment is no longer adequate for your skills. In other words, when you can out-shoot the gun it is time for a better one - and not until. Gear does not win matches - skills and experience do. Buy the absolute basics for gear to start and put the rest of your money into ammo. Lots and lots of ammo. An old adage applies here ---- it's not the violin that makes the music, it's the violinist.

Third, when you find matches that you want to participate in be sure to offer to help those club members who are out there before everyone else setting up the courses of fire. If you show up early a couple of times and help those guys set up you will soon find you have a whole bunch of new friends who are more than willing to help you get started with your new hobby. At the very least never leave a match until you have helped put stuff away.

Finally, your #1 goal should always be to have fun......... safely. Listen closely to the Range Officers' instructions. Take your time moving through the course of fire. Take your time shooting the targets, too - slow hits count, fast misses don't. Speed - of movement and of shooting - will come with time........... don't try to force it.

Relax. Enjoy the day. No matter where you finish in the final match results it's gonna be a lot more fun than staying home and mowing the lawn.

@tapper3 thanks for the good advice I most likely will stick with the idpa and steel matches at first.

And fun fact so as for magazines my 17 is set up to take G19 mags (and my G19 is set up for G26 mags which I only have one) which means I only have 1 more mag for the G19 than I do for my G17, so no real advantage there.

Buy a full size 17 lower from gun broker....you will appreciate the extra grip to hold onto.

I can never seem to find any gen 4 (especially 19) frames for under like $300

Consider looking at GSSF matches to begin with. They're pretty basic as far as matches go. Several divisions are available, depending on the gun you want to run. There is usually one in the Oswego area and on in the Binghamton area later on in the summer.

I thought you chopped the grip on uour 17.....if so you definitely want a full sized grip for competition.

Oh! And the stickler.....all disciplines have specific rules for classes.......”no outside modifications”. They dont even allow certain stippling........

As a result, if you could run it (not sure if IDPA will allow it at all. I stopped shooting IDPA because of all the ninny rules), you would be in open class. No big deal to run a “stock gun” in open but you will never be able to get a feel on how you are really ranking. You would never be in the money/prize table etc etc.

Completely forgot about the no outside perm. modifications, and never crossed my mind of a grip chop being such, well shit if it puts me in open then I might as well go with my P-07 (until I get my 17 milled)

I cant say enough about competeing as it make all the small motor skills of re charging a magazine, clearing a jam ,running and gunning, trying to acquire targets in motion,Listening to what happening around you instead of tunnel vision and tunnel hearing , it makes them all large gross motor skills that your brain learns to do on its own. Challenge your self you will be shocked at what you can do.
