I used some Hoppes oil my dad gave me when he was alive.
I've just been a bit shy about using their lubrication products since that happened. I've used their bore solvents, and still do, but stopped their oil.

We can only go by what our experience suggests. I've always used breakfree CLP in the past with #9 as a cleaner. I've come by a quantity of Slip 2000 EWL so I'll give that a shot. I do like the idea of the aerosol cleaner spray listed above. Seems like a convience thing where I could just hose it in the nooks and crannies, have the solvent evaporate but leave behind a protective lubricant film. I'm lazy so spritz and done is appealing to me.
This is why I clean things as little as possible (navy thinking was, hey let's take this giant sonar that get dipped directly into the ocean during certain ops, oh and every couple of months we should split It in half and look inside at all the circuit cards to make sure they are all still in there, close it up and go right back into the water)

@FrankenCub my dad had a Ithaca pump 20ga .. every time he let me shoot it ( i was a teen at the time ) click ... click .. click .. nothing ..
dad would get pissed grab it , booom ... after many months of this we finally figured out what it was .. i would pull back on the slide also to make it tight to my shoulder .. pulling back on the slide make it not work .. and even knowing this i did the same dang thing and miss a great shot at a fox . GRRR i was pissed ..

Mine was definitely a temperature issue with Hoppes oil. I used to put a few thousand rounds through it a year shooting skeet, hunting rabbits, grouse, and deer. It always served me well, wish I still had it. Once I cleaned out the oil and tried something different the issue went away.
I don't remember what the temp was, but it was nuts in chest cold for sure.

I've tried many solvents and lubricants and after a while realized it's all gimmicky. There is no "best". As long as you can get the carbon off and the lubricant makes surfaces slick it should be all good. The lubricant I feel is the last thing that will cause failure. The guns design and or poor manufacturing/imperfections come first. Try a nickel boron bolt in an AR and see just how secondary cleaning/lubing your rifle is. Or better yet try an AK.

My wife loves the smell of Hoppes #9. It's the only “cologne” she will let me wear. She will NOT let me clean guns in the living room however. Go figure...
I just thought I'd resurrect this old thread to mention that I did buy some of the Hoppes Gun Medic, both the straight cleaner and the cleaner/lube mix and it proved invaluable at my recent classes. One guy was using it to keep a temperamental AR running, another guy was using it to quickly blow out the carbon in his suppressed AR. I myself used it when I got home as a quick lazy clean on the Galil. When I broke it down this morning I found little to do other than wiping down the parts and re-lubing.
What makes it nice is simply that its in a spray can and its easy and fast to just blast some into the action.

I don't recall if I've said before but I've been using Strike Industries AntiVenom XPLC.. I didn't shoot much in the winter but it worked well. It's also in a WD40-type spray can, and has a pleasant smell.
Before that I was a FrogLube devotee, though I became concerned about freezing temperature issues I read about (gumming up in cold temps etc).
Hell WD-40 would proly work fine too. Does it cut through carbon? That's all that's really needed.

I've been using motor oil for years. Ran out months ago at home. Gave Wd40 a try. You know what? It cleans pretty dammed good. It smells good too. I was concerned about it penetrating primers so I looked it up. It's a myth. The Box of Truth actually dipped bullets in it for days and they fired just fine. I'm going to continue using it.

I don't care for petroleum distillates so much.
I most use mp7 pro or hoppes elite for cleaning, and slip2000 and egw grease for lube.
I think i have some mp7 clp too. Its not bad.
With the grease, I've run ar15s and saigas dirty as pigs with no issues.

I think you, and others, are missing the point of why I like this stuff. Its all about the aerosol can delivery. Its jets out a pretty high volume of cleaner at a fairly high pressure so it mechanically blasts away carbon quickly, the solvent dissolves the more stubborn deposits and it does actually leave a noticeable film of lube behind after the solvent evaporates.
It works really well as a seconds quick range remedy.

I'm with Robin and oc shooter, 50 years and never a problem.
Sigh. Its not about products having a problem.
Once again I simply like the one second cleaning job the aerosol can provides. Literally, gun running sluggish or just really dirty on the range or at class, competition? Open action, spray, close action. Works great for that.
Um.......... stuff?
