How many mags per gun

I would really like to hear NYgunforum members' thoughts on how many magazines you LIKE to own per gun and does that number differ for certain guns.

My "Be Prepared" prepper or scout instinct is to hoard them, since they could be considered consumable or a bartering item.

For the range my mind says "have enough to not spend any time reloading mags for a range session."

The penny pincher in me says just stock spare springs and settle on a half dozen per gun.

Living in a state run by FUAC. I think we need to have twice as many as someone in a free state, because of capacity restrictions and that must be what FUAC wants us to do.

What are your thoughts goals for your personal mag inventory goals and do they vary for CCW, range, HDW, or bug out choices?

Thanks. I went through 12 pages of search hits from 3 different searches here and did not see this one. Lately there have been runs on mags for 4 different handguns I use where they have been "unobtainium" for months on end. Trying to find a balance between more ammo, more guns, more parts, more range time, etc.

I dont mind loading mags at the range and have found the 3 mags at the range is enough. If its a carry pistol having mags with carry ammo is good so they dont need to be used for range use, how many do you carry? If its for bug out consider how much weight and bulk you want to have in mags. If you like to hoard then there is never enough.

As many as you can afford, but don't forget to save some money to buy the Ammo to load into them too !

3 for range toys is enough. Your go to rig that you'll strap onto your body should dictate how many you need for your working gun plus a few extras for replacements and training mags.

Anything more is just a waste of money. Even a combat soldier doesn't have the enormous amount of magazines that some arm chair warriors have.

I like to train. For training classes/drills I find you need a minim of 5. Keeping in mind that mags are consumable items that wear and need replacing you should have spares, so I keep 10 for each pistol (more for my 1911). As they wear out I order more.

Do you still have room in your safe? if yes buy more guns, if no buy another safe and buy more guns.
Do you still have room in your house? if yes buy more mags, if no build an addition and buy more mags.

Back when I could have full capacity mags I had 6 per gun, (most of my guns have a brother or two that use the same mags). now that I can only have 10 rounders I strive for buying a couple of mags every time I think about it.

My bolt guns are the only ones that have less than 6 mags per gun.

My 2 cents:
For going to the range, or for training, between 5 and 10 mags per gun to minimize reloading time lost.
For a semi EDC, whatever it takes to hold 30 rounds minimum.
In case of the need to bug out, 200 rounds minimum for every handgun platform I would take with me. For AK's and AR's, minimum 20 mags, of at least 20 or 30 round capacity per platform.

I think its best to get just a few extra to start then focus on ammo for range time and training.
After that you can pickup on or two at at time here and there.

Shipping 3 mags with the pistol is becoming the standard nowadays. A welcome trend given the high cost of most pistol mags.

Hmmm this topic will make me ponder..I can say for now I have 3 for each handgun as I bought them when the safe act first came out incase they try to limit it to like 2.... I may/ should get more to have and to replace as springs wear out and "STUFF".....

Buy as many mags as you can anytime. Also, carry as many mags as you can when you carry your gun. As a general rule. I carry three spare mags on me when I carry, which is 99.999999999% of the time.

Why only one? I look at it this way,.... "how many rounds will the bad guy have?", "If there is an active shooter, how many rounds will they have?"

I don't know. But if it gets to be a situation where I am involved, I want more rounds than them.

I can’t imagine anyone who has survived a gun fight/fire fight proclaimed, that was ok, but I really had too much ammo.

What I think about is if I die from lack of ammo, my gun nut friends would never let me hear the end of it.
