No. Sorry there are people, seemingly like yourself, that are all too willing to abdicate their right to make decisions for themselves and are also all too willing to force that on others? Yes! I am also against forced seat belt laws and helmet laws. I had a mother, I don't need a state to supplant that role in my life. Is it a small thing? Yes. I can't seem to find the new rules. Is this just for big game during regular season ? Does it apply to archery ? Small game ?

For several years now, there has been a rule mandating a certain amount on orange clothing and/or orange hat during regular big game seasons, but it did not appply to archery or small game hunting.

I received it in an email from the gun club I belong to. I tried to post it but it wouldn't take. There were also several measures being implemented to take more deer in 'certain zones' like having a gun early season starting in mid September.

I believe It's for firearm season/big game season.. I read something that "NY DEC has proposed regulation changes include requiring “all hunters pursuing deer or bear with a firearm, or anyone accompanying them, to wear a solid or patterned fluorescent orange or fluorescent pink hat or vest or jacket.”

Previously hunter orange was only required for any 14 - 15 y/o hunter and their mentor hunting with a gun.

I hunt on public land so I choose to wear an orange vest/ hat during rifle season.

In many other States (AL, CO, CT, DE, FL, GA, KA, MO, MT, NB, OK, RI, SC, VA, WY etc..) blaze orange is a requirement when big game hunting with a firearm.

I got my shots because organizations I belong to were requiring that we get them in order to transition from zoom meetings back to face to face meetings. Besides, despite the gloom and doom from some about the side effects some people have, in general I believe that the shots help more than they hurt

Without a doubt..but stuff like blaze orange reduces the possibility of such accidents. I've been wearing blaze orange anytime I enter the woods during any big game season. If I don't have orange on, I stay out of the woods. One of those things that was drilled onto e as a kid by my parents from a young age.

But making it mandatory is absolutely beyond anything the government should be able to mandate.

On state owned land, as a condition of being allowed to hunt there ? Sure.

If you want to require it for anyone you allow to hunt on your property ? Of course.

But nobody but the property owner should be able to mandate that.



Safety issue ? What if nobody else is allowed to hunt there at all ? If you're the only one with a gun allowed on the property, why would you need orange ?


How about people who aren't hunting ? Aren't hikers just as at risk as hunters ? It's not like the gun you're holding attracts bullets. If they're going to mandate it for the hunters, why not everyone during big game season ?

I think most people, other than young children, know it is a good idea to wear orange while hunting afield. It's just common sense. It shouldn't need to be a law. Maybe cover it in the safety class and list it in some literature. After that, if idiots want to be idiots, that's up to them. It seems to be a non-issue though as I said, pretty much everyone knows better anyhow.

I don't think that its a huge issue, and I think the safety aspects outweighs any inconvenience. Last I knew people don't hunt naked; you're going to be afield in some form of clothing, and if you're hunting that should include old school safety orange or the more recent, now-authorized fluorescent pink.
We can play what if's all day long, but it seems to be one of the common refrains at accidental hunting related shootings that the shooter is quoted as saying something along the lines of " I thought I was shooting at an animal" or " I didn't know ( that they were shooting at a person, or they thought it was a deer ) ". This removes that excuse to some degree.

If I am in the woods during gun season, even if I am not hunting, I am wearing orange as ways to protect against the lazy hunters who shoot at noises and unidentified movements. So are the people with me. Better safe than sorry. The burden to wear the orange is on the hunters, but anyone setting foot in the woods during gun season should be proactive. When I was a kid my parents wouldn't allow the kids to be in our own woods because we had no idea who might take it upon themselves to be a trespassing slob hunter and take potshots at anything that moved.

Must we measure every little thing against "unimaginable tyranny"? It's a hunter safety regulation. You shouldn't even have to be told to do it. If you want to be a tough guy then don't do it. No punishment the state could give you (small fine?) could possibly be worse than having somebody accidentally shoot you. Be smart.
