Orange County is in a whole different situation than the great white north. You can get doe permits all over the place here, then go back for more.

You can get LOTS of permits and second round permits. BUT can ya get places to hunt them?

So I was in a store, person I see is stealing stuff, should I turn him in? I myself won't do the correct thing, but I myself and others get fucked in future because of it. Actually Bushmaster several years ago they passed a law the exempts landowners in NYS from liability when they let hunters use their property as long as they do not charge a fee. I personally can think of many reasons why a landowner would not let someone hunt their property. My neighbor had his house shot through by some guy who was target shooting a few years back. I met another fella who's daughter was shot in the arm accidentally buy a fella woodchuck hunting with a 30-06 of all things. There are many many stories like this. I have known people that were so careless with a gun that I would not want to be within 10 miles of them. Go to youtube and watch some of these idiots and ask yourself would you let them on your land? I have known many a good hunter and I also have know many unsafe sloppy hunters. The question is how do you know who is good or bad unless you have spent time with them.
As a land owner I can tell you there are many people I would not let hunt my property and some that I would. Now with that said I might add a good way
to get access to some farmers property. You stop by and say Hi long before hunting season. Perhaps offer to give the landowner a hand from time to time. He gets to know you and you get to know him.

The DEC is a government agency with a very specific mission. Based on the health of our various wildlife "herds" in NYS, I give them a passing grade. Albany's failings in nearly every other aspect of governance does not diminish the success of the DEC.

Friday I spoke in person at a lunchron with my state Senator, Andrew Lanza (a fellow hunter) and our boro president. Theu told me the DEC was 100% on board with starting a special deer season here in Staten Island. They were willing to take an amazingly unpopular political stance because they knew it was the right decision regarding the mission of their agency. The city of course shut it down, opting instead to dart and vaccinate bucks, a pointless and expensive endeavor. Two levels of government, one playing politics and one sticking to its mission.

The DEC in NYS is one of our few bright spots.

DEC is better than most, but they still work for FUAC.

Their mission is important, and probably one of the few that are legitimate government functions (managing truely public resources). But, ultimately they still report to the quagmire that is Albany, so everything they do is suspect.

Buffalo were hunted hard by the us govt as a way to kill the indians but destroying a valuable food source.

I've been teaching the hunter safety course for Archery since before the state required it to get an archery stamp. I always tell my class that this state has more stupid, redundant, conflicting, and unconstitutional laws than any other state in the union, but by and large, when it comes to our conservation laws they generally get it right, obey them. 'The Conservation Department' became politicized when it became the 'Department of Environmental Conservation' but when it comes to wildlife issues, hunting opportunities, and the laws concerning them both, they have done a bang up job.
