If you shoot any surplus produced pre 1950-54 there is a good chance it is corrosive, be sure to clean the rifle appropriately to remove the corrosive salts.

1. Do yourself a favor and do not shoot corrosive surplus ammunition. The rifle will require disassembly and a thorough cleaning with hot water and soap three days in a row to remove the corrosive priming. If you miss any it will slowly eat your rifle.

2. The M1 Garand has specific lubrication needs. Be sure to learn these points of lubrication and your rifle will run like it was supposed to. Failure to do so will increase wear and shorten the life of it.

3. The M1 rifle should only be disassembled when absolutely necessary to minimize wear and maintain good lock up.

I learned the above from an old school armorer, take it for what it may be worth to you. Have fun, nice rifle.

Syracuse Gun Show. The larger ammo sellers often have some surplus Garand food in spam cans (some come on enblocs in bandoleers). Still some surplus Greek HXP out there. If you make the drive there is a fairly large show in Phoenixville, PA several times a year. I've always had good luck finding either surplus or new Garand loadings.

No but 7.62x51 is an excellent cartridge. In fact many an M1 have been re chambered to .308 and those who have them, love them. I still love my M1 in its original chamber.... but prefer an M1A. Ammo is cheaper and more common.

It always is the same price when I’m at stores. I shot the M1A once, I want to say 2 years ago, I don’t remember the experience but I know the person had a almost pistol grip stock (but NYS complaint does they can’t count it was a pistol grip) so you can wrap your hand around the stock. Just found a pic.

That's a JAE chassis. Expensive and made for bench rest shooting. Never intended to be for compliant issues. Just worked out that way.

Edit: An Archangle same comment though. Not as favorable as the JAE.
