Is there a reason Glock serialized the frame, slide and barrel?

As the title asks, my Glock 23 has the frame, slide and barrel serialized. Why? Which part is then considered the firearm? It just seems strange to me. What if I want to buy another Glock slide or barrel? I'd end up with two or even three different serial numbers on the handgun. WTF?

The “actual firearm” need to have the makers name, city, (state if applicable) AND serial number. If it does not contain all 3 then it is not the “firearm”.
