I'm basically set through probably this time next year. I go through two things a lot:

  1. Hand sanitizer for when I'm out and about.
  2. O'Keeffe's working hands, because the sanitizer kills the shit out of my hands. It's the only stuff strong enough to actually prevent my hands from bleeding.

Yeah I hear ya . . I'm O'Keefes was the only thing that kept the blood away during the winter on my hands. Especially the thumbs.

I just bought 5 #10 Mountain House cans.
I have never bought the cans before. How long would a single can last 1 person? How long will the contents be good once opened stored in a dry, dark, room temperature space?

@Podmonkey which cans did you get? They should have a nutritional label on them. Figure an average of 2,000 calories per day. If doing strenuous work, likely much more, if sedentary then can drop down a fair amount.

you may be unpleasantly surprised by how few servings are there if you plan on getting all the calories from the #10 can. As an example, if my memory is correct, the Mountain House chili Mac #10 can has around 10 servings at about 250 cal per serving. That’s where canned veggies, beans, rice, pasta, etc come in. Best bang for the buck will be an LDS store if you happen to have one local. If not their online store is good too, but a bit more $ due to shipping. Also, a fair amount out of stock due to demand. But as an example of a case of pasta.


once open, they can collect some moisture and the mfg usually says use within 30 days or something like that.
having said that, I’ve used stuff several months after opening, but have stored either in fridge or with O2 absorber in can.

I got the Chicken n' Rice, Chili Mac, Breakfast Skillet, Stroganoff and Granola with milk n' blueberries. If the can is good for 30 days after opening that is completely fine for me. Just as long as it didn't get all stale or nasty in a few days. A month is more than ample time to consume the remainder of the can at my leasure.
I am going to have a very hard time staying out of the Granola one. I think that is the best item on the Mountain House menu.

Found them in the bulk items in the grocery aisle. I wouldn’t be surprised if some places had them in camping too.

since I had a bit of time, I did some quick mathing.. I would not recommend doing this, but since I wanted to price it out. You would need 67 of these for a 1 year supply of food, solely based on calories. This comes out to $1,340. Actually a good price compared to other 1 year kits companies are selling.

My medical preps came handy last night, sliced my foot pretty badly on some broken glass. Styptic powder and a pressure dressing until the bleeding was stanched, then disinfected the wound, closed it with medical glue and redressed it. I am thinking though I should move some medical supplies from the bathroom upstairs to my prep room downstairs, I injured the foot downstairs in the kitchen and was up half the night cleaning bloody foot prints up to the bathroom. I almost took a picture of the bathroom, looked like something out of a horror scene, blood all over, but I figured it be a bit gross to post.

It actually looked a little worse than that. It was a bad cut (was considering going to the emergency room) good sized blood puddle formed while I was getting the med stuff out and a trail of blood on and over the side of the bathtub where I hosed my foot off. Whole floor was covered in bloody smears. It was pretty gruesome. I have to replace my mop now.

@Podmonkey it is a .mil ration. They are trays of larger servings that are designed to be either heated (I think these maybe also called t rations) where the cakes are served cold. Just adds diversity. We opened up a carrot cake tray with frosting a while ago and even the wife liked it.

They are designed for a long shelf life. Typically around 10 years.

I have only ever had MREs and those little packs with the crackers and tuna salad and such.
