I'm not sure if this topic has been discussed here before. I was just thinking today that LEO in NYS should be subject to the same restrictions as civilians when it comes to gun ownerships.

I wonder if it would change things for us in terms of increased support to our cause and more push back on unconstitutional legislation?

Similarly in the way that FUDDS will now have to really decide if they are going to be staunch 2A supporters or continue to take it up the ass and sit idly by while the 2A is eroded away.

Long story short, there is no justifiable reason for cops to have any more rights then anybody else. Then our any other costume one might put on to go to soul that day.

As for "come up to my level" get back to me when we see any LEOs actually refusing to enforce the "our level" laws when it comes down to it. Refusing to provide security to the queen as she actively puts her subjects in danger.

It gets contentious because it's an indefensible point. So the snipes come in. Always does.

You give FUDDs and LEOs too much credit however. It's not that they don't care. Many agree with the stances. FUDDs don't want them assault aks because if you need more than one bullet you need to get back to the range, and LEOs often feel non uniformed folk not only don't have the business carrying a gun, but don't have the right.

Every time I hear "being in peace officer status means you have the authority to make arrests, enforce laws and carry firearms" (and I don't even mean from average Joe i mean from people or sources that should damn well know better) I cringe because some people out there are actually stupid enough to believe it. Peace officer status is not at all what "grants you" the right to carry a firearm. Stop spreading that lie.

As posted above this is a topic that's come up from time to time over the years. But that said, all citizens/civilians (LEOs are civilians), should have the same rights. I don't support restricting the rights of those in LE to be that of the common citizen but I support all citizens having the unrestricted version of the second amendment, as it was intended.

Point of clarification: Everyone has the same rights. Rights do not come from the government.

some have privileges bestowed upon them by the government due to arbitrary and capricious laws/rules or regulations.

others have unconstitutional restrictions placed upon them due to the same things the privileges are bestowed on the favored class.

The only way to solve this is to remove the people who pick winners and losers, do not comply with the restrictions or enforce them. Of course this approach requires people who have the intestinal fortitude to accept the consequences of their actions to effect change. ( example: Rosa Parks).

I knew an FFL that would only sell guns/magazines to LE that were the same as what civilians could get. He got ridiculed by people for it. Funny thing is, it was the civilians/FUDDS that criticized him the most. He lost business because of it. Kills me that the same people bitching about the gun laws will sit there and support a certain class of people to own something they can't. Like Joe friday, I carry a badge. I am able to carry, own and possess different types of firearms and firearm accessories that the average New York citizen cannot.

I absolutely think that that sucks. I do not know many officers that don't think this is shitty.

I do not think that these "privileges"should be taken away from law enforcement. I put privilege in quotes because that's not the correct word to use. New York state is an absolute joke when it comes to firearms, and firearm ownership. We all know that.

Is someone else stated in this thread this is not a defendable position. Sure we as law enforcement officers can explain the riggers of our training, the yearly qualifications, the 8-16 hours of classroom work that we do each year. The constant studying of the laws. The more in-depth background investigations that occur from most officers. But none of that really matters does it?

Like another one stated in this thread, and I agree, do not take away what we have; bestow what we have upon every New York citizen.

One of the reasons I decided to take the job that I have when I did so late in life, was because I knew that gun ownership in New York state was going to become worse. I knew that once I had a badge I would not have the same restrictions. One of the reasons why we chose Tennessee to move to, is because they don't have these kinds of restrictions. I don't want to be a cop anymore, I can't be in New York state and not have a badge. I've got to be able to own and possess whatever firearms and firearm accessories that I want.

We have at least one of those kind of cops on this forum. Granted, he is now retired which I believe is better for the citizens of the city

He has stated many times that an arrest was more important than an individual's rights. As time goes on more of these kinds of officers are retiring and leaving the job, hopefully the new batch of officers will hear to their oath and not honor these unconstitutional laws, limitations and restraints
