Holosun has a new one coming out that cowitnesses and is solar powered. I think the solar powered thing is a bit gimmicky since most people dont open carry or store their guns on their windowsills.

Not solar powered.. its battery powered but it's an internal battery that gets recharged by solar power.

The Co- witness is the gem in this not the solor shit. Most Red dots are of the 50,000 hr battery life with shake awake, at least the high end ones.

I am really not a fan of shake awake. Just something else to fail. Give me 25,000 to 30,000 of constant on and I will remember to change the battery once a year. A top load battery is also a nice feature.

Agreed more is better but at what price? Like I said above I'll change the battery once a year. Longer than 30K hours really doesn't make a difference to me.

Yup I change my rmr battery once a year. Who knows I may have 1-2 years still on the battery. But here's the thing they are cheap so why not change it once a year.. you can get a 4 pack for like $12 so what $3 a year why even be cheap and worry about it and not change them

It was two 9mm rounds not to long ago now it’s six rounds.

I haven't heard much negative feedback on Holosun, but I run a 507K on one of my carry pistols and it's been a bit finicky. The shake awake feature seems to be the problem.

When I grab the pistol, occasionally the dot won't come on right away, or it will come on but will be one of the sight picture settings I don't use.

I always have it set to just the dot, but on the half dozen occasions it's done this, it's switched to the circle and the circle with the dot. And I can't unlock the settings, power cycle the unit, or use the buttons in general. Then, 30 seconds later, it works fine like nothing happened.

I practice with the irons with the dot powered down, and any sight picture is better than no sight picture, so it's not really a life or death problem. But it's not good for a $200 investment. I actually removed the dot not long ago and just run the irons these days. Those don't fail.

Me after an extremely quick search. Here is just a quick few photos showing that irons do in fact fail, and it's not just one or two times. Again. This was a very quick search of only one source, many many more can be found

Well, I stand corrected. Egg on face, etc.

I mean, I always assumed one could break their iron sights, just that it rarely happened.

And there are certainly far fewer points of failure in a set of static, metal pistol sights than in an electronic red dot.

But I have to ask, even though my statement was premature, and irons can fail, what exactly is my alternative vs. red dots? As far as I know, it's one or the other, and I'm not going to put a red dot on every pistol I own in the event that my irons fall off unexpectedly.

Lol it's all good.. everyone has been there at some point... but with a high quality optic (yes holosun can fall in that department, usually the ones made by the kids that got 2 bowl of food that week for their pay are good to go) you have the same level of reliability if not better than iron sights

It’s almost stupid not to. If the option is available for your specific pistol to run a quality red dot, do it. The future is now. If optics weren’t better than irons you wouldn’t see 99% of rifles running some sort of optic.

I’ve seen multiple irons fail first person. Front irons fall off, rear irons drifted out, both of them chipped, shit happens. Try and buy quality parts and them failing should happen much less. As for your optic acting weird, it it’s really doing all kinds of weird shit, reach out to Holosun and they’ll most likely send you a new one to swap and send the broken one back.

Redundancy is key .
I’ve seen handguns with a dot only as well as handguns with irons only .
A dot and irons you’re GTG . If both fail you some how found yourself in one bad shit sandwich.
