Lets talk Red Dots on handguns

I ended up ordering a Holosun 507K GR X2 for my P365X. Should be here by the end of the week. Looking forward to some range time with both.

Well I may have spoken too soon...or out of turn. Amazon has spoiled me with fast shipping. Tracking shows "Shipment Received, Package Acceptance Pending" since Monday. I have no idea when this damned thing will arrive. So the range report will have to wait.

I agree. I have a cheap Primary Arms red dot on my Mk IV which is 2 MOA. The dot completely covers the orange bullseye on a 8" shoot-n-c at 30 yds. I imagine a 6 MOA dot would cover much of the target at that distance.

Quick range report.

Went to the range today and put 200 rounds through the P365X. I'm used to shooting a G19.5, and I found the Sig shot really low (with proper sight alignment) even at 21 ft. Had to compensate to get reasonably accurate hits on target using the following sight picture (not my image).



Normally I'd have the front sight post aligned (height-wise) to the rear sights, with equal spacing on either side of the front post. Note this is my first Sig, and first time shooting one. Is the above picture the normal and proper sight alignment on a Sig?

With that said, below is my target (8" Shoot-N-C) at 50 ft. Not my best work but still learning this new handgun.



In any case, a fun day at the range. Again 200 rounds without a hiccup. These were my own 124 gr FMJ reloads. The best part, when I got home the 507K X2 was waiting for me. Guess I'll be cleaning the gun and mounting the optic (if I can find the time) this weekend.

Funny mine new sig 365xl shot all left for me. Right up and down the whole target left.

Follow up: another 100 rounds . . .

Bushnell customer service came through like a champ, my lost mounting screw showed up just in time for a short range session.

Yup, a hunnert dolla scope! A single C note! And I only paid 79 scoots. Providing I can keep it mounted (Blue loctite is my friend) this should be at least cheap fun.

So I'm reading up more on pros/cons of MOA dot size.

I'm leaning towards going with 6moa because I do have astigmatism.

Do you have any feedback or advice? I'm still trying to digest everything.

Personally I'd go smaller MOA. 2 or 3.25 or 3.5 moa dots are the sweet spot IMO.

With an estigmatism it will make the dot bloom more, so if you already have a 6 moa dot and it blooms out to 12 moa it kind of makes it worse for the shooter

With a smaller dot you can turn the brightness up and will almost give you a perceived larger moa than what it actually is.

Atleast this is my understanding and I do not have experience with an estigmatism .

Also from experience I got my first real red dot the Trijicon RMR RM07 that has a 6.5 moa dot, it was nice for the first few uses, it still is nice, but as I got better with it, the more I wish I had a smaller dot


It's almost the opposite to say getting a motorcycle for the first time.. I had zero experience with riding motorcycles, my first one I bought at 23(??) Was a yamaha ninja 250. It was great for learning on. 3 weeks later I hated it and wish I had a larger bike...

Bigger dots are nice to learn on but eventually wanting a smaller dot is the natural progression

Thank you for this. Unfortunately the low shots I experienced were using the military style sight alignment, starting at 7 yds, then moving out to 50 ft once I elevated the front site as pictured in my post.

You would think so...and that's what I've thought as well. However the more I read the more I am finding recommendations that if you have astigmatism to get something like 4-6 moa.

I see a starbursting on red dots and apparently the edges of the larger moa dot are less prone to starbursting and appear more crisp and clear vs a smaller 2moa dot that starbursts.

Put another 200 rounds through the P365X, this time using the 507K-GR X2. Had to adjust the windage 8 clicks right to zero it in. I have to say it's taking a little getting used to but I like it. Spot on at 50 ft bench rested. Free hand not so much.

With that said, how do you effectively clean the slide without smearing CLP or solvent on the glass? Probably a dumb question, but even at 61 I find I'm still learning.

It has 3 reciticals. A 2moa dot, a 32moa circle, and a 32moa with a 2moa dot. I like the combined the best so far.
Thoughts?

Suppressor sights for a backup, yes but if you're using the sights to find the dot you're doing it wrong. Stand at home and press the gun out from low ready as many times as it takes for your body to learn to press the gun out to the right spot. Red dots are great but they won't let you cheat a poor presentation like open sights will. Once you refine your presentation your dot will be there every time.

Use the 32 MOA circle with the center dot. Makes finding the dot a lot easier. Once you get used to proper presentation, you can switch to the 2 MOA dot (if that's your preference). At least that's what I've learned from the countless YouTube videos I've seen on the subject, and it's working well for me.

Sig red dots are garbage.. they have good clean glass and break the second you look at them.

It's so bad that instead of making their optics stronger, sig instead just made a small medal guard you add over the dots

Well that settles it and it’s the same price as the 507c x2.

Yeah, that same premise (in general) goes for Vortex as well. Vortex pistol optics are trash. Their high end scopes are nice.

Anyone have a take on the Palmetto State Armory Dagger glocky gun? Seems too go to be true. Looking at the slide packages, especially the extreme carry slide with an RMR cut, threaded barrel, and tritium night sight front (suppressor height) for $250-270. Got a spare G19 Gen 3 laying around here. . .
