Long gun bug is buzzing around

After dsd posted up about his new 6.5creedmoor i started reading about that cartridge. i ALWAYS need something to research that is gun related.

Well that led to more long range precision shooting , etc...etc..... now my $400 vortex viper is feeling insignificant and im looking around to see what i can sell to maybe get a pst or some other respectable optic under $1000.

My rem 700 (.308)is sitting in a hs precision stock, and i really want a dbm for it, but i dont want junk and that will cost me some good coin.... then i say, why bother, just get a chassis that already offers a dbm for just a few hundred more....

All in good time, my cc is melting after xmas so i gotta work on that first.

Thanks, no its just a generic amazon brake, but it tested very good (reducing felt recoil, etc..)against high $ brakes.

Darkeagle did thread my bolt handle and install the knob though.

I just picked up some gmm 168 and some Hornady 168amax to see what it likes better. I havent had it out yet in this configuration so im not sure how good shes gonna shoot. I expect it to be sub moa, but we will see as long as i do my part. Ive been reading up on blueprinting, etc... too. Again, alot of $ but all in good time.

I am planning on building two 700s this year. One will be in 35 Remington because I like the cartridge. The other in 6.5 CM for some leg stretching. I am hoping someone will make bottom metal for the 700 to accept the DPMS LR 308 mags this year.

Try the 155gr TMK and stick it into the lands. You can hit up to 2800-2850fps with an accurate load and get less recoil, flatter trajectory and further than the 168gr. This is for paper or steel right? Perfect for lapua small primer palma brass.

8-9 mils at 1000 yards !!.. supersonic up to 1200yds...

Welp.... im not a reloader at the current time. 99% of my freetime goes to my kids, and the little freetime i get i keep fit, and do some kind of firearms training. I but i do want to get into it once my kids are older.

My barrel is a 1:10 twist so do you think it would like that bullet weight?

I will test them at 100yds. i have an area that i can safely go out to 800, but have done anything serious past 400 so far.

It should shoot it just fine, you just have to figure out what bullet weight your gun likes. You can also try the 175 GMM to see how it groups.

Every thing I have read is 24 inch barrel is the perfect length for the 6.5 CM.
Here is one article where the guy cut the barrel from 27 down to 16 once inch at a time.

26" from the recoil lug is the standard for heavy long rifles but 25 or 24 will also do very well.
I prefer to keep all rifles at 24 - 25 max measured from the recoil lug forward .
The people doing 28"-30" is not practical. Those better left for F-class and bench rest crews.

IMO the test is nice but they can use a different slower powder to maximize the power
in the longer barrel. So I think here is great to see the 120gr but a tad arbitrary with the
heavier 142gr smks. They should be betting at least 100fps more.

You may want to test at 200yds, 1 hole groups are hard to read @100

H4350 seems to be the powder all the small group competitors are using for the 6.5 CM which is probably why the author chose it. It is proclaimed to be the perfect powder for the cartridge. I am not sure how that powder is going to be in the semis but in the bolt guns it seems to be the cat's meow.

My question is how or where do people find actions to do a build? I don't think my skill level is to the point that warrants starting with a custom action. So it seems like the best option is to use a donor action to start a build.

My question is how or where do people find actions to do a build? I don't think my skill level is to the point that warrants starting with a custom action. So it seems like the best option is to use a donor action to start a build.

My rifle us a rem 700 sps aac-sd, 20" threaded bull barrel. It was an moa gun in the factory hogue stock with winchester 180gr hunting ammo, so with the hs precision stock, better glass than before, bedding the scope rail, and match grade ammo im hoping for .65 moa or better.

I think you've outlined a key point that is missed by a lot of people, including myself sometimes. Most stock mid grade rifles now days out preform most shooters abilities. I would like to do a custom rifle in 6.5cm, but I don't know what I really want. I know I want a rifle light enough to run and gun with. I hope to shoot some precision rifle matches in the future. I also would like a few big calibers too but those projects are way down the road, unless I win the lottery.

If you want to start from scratch you can order a new 700 receiver and bolt from gun broker or you can find a reasonably priced used 700 or savage model 10 and strip off the parts that will not be used and toss them, or try to sell them. For my two 700 builds this year's I am starting with new 700 receivers and buying the parts to complete the rifles. It probably would be cheaper to find a couple of used 700s to be able to use the recoil lug, bolts, bottom metal and internal magazine. That would probably save about 150-200 bucks. The barrels, stocks and triggers would get stripped and discarded.

a lite Varmit barrel profile is probably as light as you want to go to shoot precision rifle matches. Even local matches would heat your barrel rather quickly and lead to wandering hits if your barrel muzzle gets smaller than .750 I try to keep my barrels .810 at the muzzle or larger for my bench guns. The savage is .750 at the muzzle and it is pretty light. For my auto loaders I try to keep the gas block diameter in the .936 range for precision shooting and .750 for the carrying type rifle.
