He had to go outside to get his gun out of the car and then headed back in? Dumbass move on multiple levels.
In todays society? I'd call the cops and wait on site. Absent rule of law? I'd wait for them to leave then shoot them in the spine from behind and leave them there to crawl around.

Call the cops,not only for common sense and the legal repecussions but there is a chance they have gotten into my weapons and I would be grossly out gunned with just a pistol on me.

I think the courts would accept "I was trying to save my dog" as legal justification for going all SWAT on em. But I'd feel that way about my dog too.

My neighbor has kids that get home late. He'll growl, jump off the bed (yes he sleeps with us) and run to the door barking like a doberman.
I don't know what he'd actually do but he thinks he can do something.

This was in TX, not NY. He probably could have waited in the bushes and shot them in the back as they were leaving and been OK.
Legally not the smartest move. Personally I think he should have to the right to enter his own home and remove the threat.

If you don't know they are still there you can certainly investigate on your own. Being armed while you do so is prudent. For all you know it was some wild animal that broke in and you'll have to put down a raccoon.
You don't have to sell it to me. I'm ok with shooting an intruder, even if you could have retreated. It's your house and they made the choice to violate that.

I have no desire to shoot anybody over replaceable items.
So...I'm going to go with: Call 911, stay behind cover, keep video recording the door until police arrive, be sure my concealed carry pistol is ready (since it was in Texas and I'd have one), and keep cool.

Basically this. I have no formal training, just rounds down range like anyone else here. If I'm already outside and out of danger, I'd do this. After talking to my local PD, I know for a fact that I'll be waiting probably 10 minutes. That's a long time to wait, and it'll probably feel like 30 minutes.

well the first thing I would do, I'd forget to mention I HAD TO GO BACK TO THE CAR AND GET A FIREARM.
second, my little buddy, my or may not be with me. If he's inside with the bad guys, he's either dead or he's showing them where all the good stuff is.
third, I'd wait and listen at the door. I know my own house pretty well, I can tell where they are inside just from listening. If they're in the bedroom or office, they will be in a place with little to no egress unless they go through a window. I'll just quietly wait in the kitchen for them to come to me. THEN it's game on.
But that's just me, YMMV

You're a braver man than I. If I'd managed to safely exit the house during an invasion, and there was no other family in the home, the furthest thing from my mind would be going back inside. There are some surprises that I'd like not to experience.
