The similarities between this and the election are impossible to ignore.

After months of being warned about what might happen when the event finally went down he threw a tantrum--and by the way I will never, ever understand how some of you look at this as the behavior from a strong man. To me this is the behavior of a crybaby weakling, not a competent, admirable leader--but anyway:

Trump's behavior is irrelevant to the questions at hand - was the FBI raid illegal and did he declassify these records?

I think the theory proposed by conservative tree house is close to the truth. Trump had these records to document just how bad (and illegal) the actions of the CIA, FBI and DOJ were in the russiagate affair. But here Trump's behavior is mystifying. Why didn't he release these records when he had the chance? What was he waiting for? He certainly deserves criticism for that decision.

Well, if you're one of those who believe Trump is always playing 50D chess, then he was waiting for the fake .gov to shoot themselves in the foot by raiding him.
If you're a normal person, you're more likely to believe he was holding them as some kind of "Get Out Of Jail Free" card in case the fake .gov came after him, and waited too long.
And if you're one of those who believe in everything Dementia Joe is and does, then you think the fake .gov had Trump flustered and scared him into holding on to it until it could be retrieved.

Which ever way it was, We The People will never see the information contained therein, and will never have the chance to see which party is the real criminal.

Below is a link to a deep dive on the issue from CTH. In July 2018 the DOJ sent a letter to the FISA court. The DOJ is "defending the Carter Page FISA application as still valid." The DOJ for the first time names Christopher Steele, Glenn Simpson and the law firm of Perkins Coie. It also states it found Steele's sub-source (i.e. the original source for the lies in the steele document) as "truthful and cooperative." That is a lie, because 18 months prior to the creation of this letter from the DOJ the FBI had already interviewed the sub-source and he said the statements attributed to him were nonsense. At the end of the letter the DOJ states "the FBI has reviewed this letter and has confirmed its factual accuracy."

The DOJ sent the letter in 2018 because the Mueller investigation was at its peak and it needed the materials gained as a result of the FISA court approvals for its report. If it became public the FISA court orders were based on lies then all the information gathered as a result would be illegal to use.

The FISA court wanted the letter released in 2020 to show it had been lied to. The problem is the letter is written in such passive, bullshit, corporate double-speak that only someone with in depth knowledge of the issues, the players and the timeline would realize how bad the actions of the FBI were. It was easy for the mainstream media to ignore. The letter itself is redacted in some parts (presumably to cover the ass of the bad actors at the FBI).

There is A LOT of "in the weeds" background information that CTH goes into regarding the letter, which is necessary to prove his conclusion.

Trump had the full, unredacted letter. He also had unredacted versions of lots of other documents. He probably was going to introduce them as evidence in his lawsuit which is why the FBI panicked and raided his house. He should have released the letters well before now. Keeping them secret allowed the corrupt assholes still in government to sieze them.
