Marlin firearms ?

what is the company history?

Im in the market for a lever action 45-70 and I prefer a side loading rifle. I like the Henry big bore ( all weather) but Im not sure I like a tube feed big bore gun.

I have been watching some YouTube videos, both Pro, and con. Im a little concerned.

has Marlin straightened out their manufacturing issue?

anyone shed some light on this issue. Im open to other manufacturers too

I've to this day not heard many good things.

I agree on the side load thing though. Holding me back from Henry. Think I'll go Winchester.

I am also in the same boat. I have been considering the 1895 GSBL but at just under $1000 I am skeptical. Currently Considering a Winchester 1886 Deluxe for around $1,400.

No side loading keeps me from buying a Henry all weather in 357 magnum.

Henry really should offer side loadi g gate models. Particularly given that they coukd absorb much of fallen Marlin's market if they did. Such a shame considering Marlin used to make excellent guns. Just one of many reasons Remington deserves to go under.

Don't forget pistol grip stocks. More companies need to offer affordable lever guns with pistol grip stocks. I am not a straight stock fan so finding something I like is very hard to do.

I also prefer the "pistol" grip stock. But I can adapt to the straight style stock.
A Winchester '94 trapper carbine in .357 is what I'm after.

I think you mean a 92. The 94 is rifle calibers.

I am also after one of those. They made some only a few years ago and ill be damned if I can find any. I'll take either one of these.

yep they are but also a nice gun too. It's tough to find what you want sometimes so in the end you just gotta suck it up.

The stronger action of the 94 is hardly a necessity for the .357 Magnum cartridge.

All for case coloring too. Nothing special about the guns. Not worth it.

I have a marlin bolt action .22 I've shot it a lot, barely cleaned it, and it's still dead nuts accurate. I can shoot a pencil with it from 50-60 feet away standing against a tree.

HAHA. There is a little more then case coloring in the price.

I believe the lack of a loading Gate has something to do with keeping true to the original design. That and the fact that from what I’ve read Winchester still holds the patent on the loading gate design.

You could always get one of these. A very well made Uberti yellow boy in 357/38 .

Henry needs to pony up then because I think they are fine rifles otherwise.

I have an older Marlin 1895 made in 1974 and a Henry in 45-70.
The Marlin was my grandpas, the Henry i won in a raffle.
They are both great guns and I cant really choose a favorite. The tube feed doesnt really bother me but its a bit ridiculous in a 4 round gun IMO.
The are both accurate and reliable. Ihavent hunted with either but they have some target use.
The Marlin has been shot maybe 100 times and 75 of those were me. Grandpa prefered 30-06 for his annual elk hunt.

I like the older JM stamped Marlins, After Remington bought out Marlin the quality went down South (way south). P
If it's not a older Marlin, I'll go with out.

But then again I hear a lot of good reports about the Henry guns.
His heart is in the company, he seams sincere.

I was at a gun shop a couple of years ago and a woman had a Henry 22lr she wanted to sell, she bought it for her son. Said it was the biggest piece of shot ever made, it won,t cycle the ammo.
I asked her if she contacted Henry, her reply was, NO.
I asked her how old her son was, she said twelve.my friend bought the rife for really cheap, took it home, shot it and never had one hang up.

Her son must not of been going all the Way with the lever.

I have a friend who says all lever guns suck, he doesn't cycle them right and considers them all garbage.
He can't even cycle my old Winchester 22 pump, doesn't pull it back far enough.

He,s a semi auto fan, all other actions are garbage in his eyes, even bolt actions.

So some of these bad reports might be operator failure, I'm sure a lot are genuine.

Find an older Marlin lever gun. That's what I did for my 30/30.

The quality has improved on Marlin since the initial production post relocation. There are some issues that used to plague the line that have been remedied.

I'm a big fan of the original Marlin's. own several in various calibers including a 45-70.
Since Remington brought out Marlin, their quality has gone down hill. I sold two Remlin's (Marlins made under Remington)because of quality issues. Many Marlin enthusiast will rather pay extra for an old Marlin vs. buy a new Remlin (even with a rebate. lol)
Depending on the 1895 you seek. Some thing like the 1895SBL or 1895GBL was introduced under Remington mgt.
The current quality of Marlin rifles are hit or miss. You may come across a really nice one or it could be a nightmare that you send back & forth to Marlin for repairs (I've heard many horror stories from Marlin owners.) You have to know what to look for... canted sight, fitment, machining, tool marks.. etc. Many suggest looking it over in person before purchase. But many are tempted by the online sales & jump on one hoping to get a nice one.
I love my old 1895GS. it's a Stout little cannon.
