Mini 14 w/ flash suppressor

I recently purchased a Ruger Mini 14 from a store. This version to be exact Ruger® Mini-14® Tactical Rifle Autoloading Rifle Model 5819
There is a chiseled X half on the barrel, half on the flash suppressor. I assume so someone would know if I were to remove it as there would be half an X left only on the barrel. There might be glue holding it to the threads as well, I’m not 100% sure. I’m confused about the legality of this. As far as I know one of the banned features is a flash suppressor. It was my first gun purchase and I was foolishly intimidated by the whole process and didn’t ask any questions. Is this a common practice to make the gun compliant? Or maybe they swapped the flash hider with a mock one I’ve heard about. Although it looks like the one in the link above. Thanks in advance for any help. I look forward to learning more and being a member of this forum.

the mag needs to be fixed .. if you remove the flash, the thread protector needs to be pinned,, not loctied

The law is vague. There is no definition in the safe act for what constitutes removed threads

Tell your dealer to get you a ranch rifle if possible, or a refund.

The wording of the law says flash hider, compensator and muzzle break. If you have other muzzle device you are fine.

Its quite simple. A semi-auto with a detachable magazine and ANY ONE of the banned features is a no go for legality in NY. Banned features are linked below. IF the flash hider is real, then it's illegal in NYorkistan.

This is commonly used to satisfy the ATF on muzzle devices that are on barrels shorter than 16", but the device brings it over. 16" is the shortest legal rifle barrel outside the NFA.

if its a real flash, either change it or fix the mag .

I'm not overly experienced with the Mini platform. Is there a good way to fix the mag and breach load it? It's not like an AR that you can separate the lower.

There is a stripper clip guide that can be put on the bolt, but really it's a bunch of hassle for. .223 to keep a flash suppressor. If his dealer sold him one, he should make it right and get him a ranch which is no questions asked safe act legal and fully functional.


Stripper clips suck donkey penis. They were obsolete by the end of world war 2 at the latest.

Yes. It's actually much easier with the right adaptor.

Like I said, there is no definition in the safe act for what constitutes destroyed or removed threads. Yes, some of us pin and weld, and no one has been prosecuted for such. Still, it's a silly risk here to take becuase Ruger makes a great functional ranch rifle.

Pinning a flash hider to the barrel doesn't make it not a flash hider. It's still a banned feature unless the gun doesn't have a detachable magazine. Which would make pinning it pointless. But what will hold up in court for a fixed mag on a rife that wasn't originally designed for it, no one knows.
