Most reliable Battle rifle -AR308?

I havent done much research on this yet but im curious as to who makes the most reliable AR in 308?

Long story short, all my long gun research has me wanting a nice bolt action in 6.5 creedmoor, and i would have to sell my current rem 700 in 308 to afford it, but down the road id need/want to replace the 308, but with a semi auto.

I like what Aero precision has to offer, but what else is good?

To be very specific, id be looking for an AR style rifle .308.

Bulletguy, i figured you would have good info on this.

I'm really liking the Aero Precision M5. Anybody have any feedback on the reliability of this one?

Not sure really, if i did it myself it would be mostly to get a real accurate barrel. If its an moa gun out of the box then maybe just store bought.

Now this is nothing I'm looking to do in the near future, this is all just research at this point.

I bought my first two upper assemblies from DPMS they were both sub MOA out of the box, with FGGM. The others I have built myself. I plan on replacing a couple of the barrels with 6.5 CM barrels this year and leaving my DPMS barreled uppers alone.

I won't argue that the Scar is a fine rifle, but I'm not sure I would justify the price tag over an AR10. Put the money into optics and ammo.

Also, I'm a mag whore. Last I knew, Scar mags were hard to find and God awful expensive when you did.

if you look at the the "upgrades" that you get with the scar out of the box it closes the gap. monolithic rail. factory irons. gas/piston. adjustable gas system for use with suppressors. (if you look at those options piston=LWRC $2800. add monolithic rail is meg....$2500+ etc etc. if you add those options then it is closer. a good quality 308 starts at $1800........an entry level DPMS is not what i call good quality/most reliable/battle rifle). they pretty much thought of it all. i love the fact that i can add a can onto my scars with only a flip of the switch.

yes. scar mags are proprietary. $35 per mag. they are easy to find now. no problem.

bottom line is the OP asked about most reliable. and battle rifle. he did not ask for best price. accuracy. features. weight etc etc.

so to answer his direct question: best battle rifle: SCAR17. most reliable: SCAR17

FWIW i have both the 16 and 17. i have over 22,000 rounds on my scar16. it has NEVER malfunctioned. NEVER. i shoot it out to 450 still....even with that many rounds i can still hit 3 gun style steel targets out to 350 with ease....and 450......the 450 is not as easy....but that could just be me/the 55 grain bullets etc etc.

the irons are awesome. i shot irons with it for 3 years

the 17 i have hit out to 875 on a 2 moa target. i have less rounds on it (expensive ammo) but it has run perfect as well.

I think you need to reread the question which is the first line of the post. "who makes the most reliable AR in 308?"

he did not ask that either. most mag fed semis are not either.......best battle rifle is not a ny configuration no matter how you shake it.

True but battle rifle is only mentioned in the title, we know he lives in NY and is not a special catagory person, so with those constraints in mind, the SCAR might not be the best choice or an option even though it may be most reliable battle rifle.

ha ha ha. again. that is why i prefaced my response in post 4. then proceeded to answer the OP questions,.....even his ambiguity, in my following posts.

post #4 answers the title question.
post #8 answers the OP paragraph 1. a true stoner design.
post #10 answers the OP "spirit of the question. a modified stoner design AR type 308

so no matter how you shake it....even with a poor title/question by the OP i gave all the answers/suggestions he could want.

Preferences, preferences, I would never ask you to suggest anything you don't have a good opinion. I can only give opinions on what I have owned and used. I don't have any issues with DPMS, Matrix Aerospace, LMT, go ballistic, Aero or Springfield (M1A), LRB (M25) all have functioned reliably for me some more accurate than others. All my AR308 type guns are Frankenstein guns (as in not bought as complete rifles from the factory). Speaking in terms of reliability these days most failures can be contributed to the Magazine, ammo or user.

This is what I was talking about. The old stuff. My first thought was something in the FAL family/variants, then the M1A and hell even a Garand. FWIW you could get a FAL family rifle for well under half the price of the new stuff. So basically one of the really long heavy guns made of steel and built for men.
