Well I don't know much about this and like most would only be speculating at best. I can say that thank god it was a .380.....
I read some comments about being orchestrated and it very possible but I can say this, throw on a safety vest, helmet...ect, around any construction site, MTA location grand central included and no one will stop you. Just look that part and act like you are supposed to be there.

If the attacker popped smoke first and blindly started shooting, having a gun wouldnt help you as you have to see your target, in a scenario like that there isnt much you could do once he started. Situational awarwness to see something screwed up before he started might be your only hope.

So, what is known thus far...
62 year old black man, Frank James. Found on scene was a Glock 17 with the serial number scratched out. (Not a Ghost Gun). Three 33 round mags. One was empty and in the gun. Another was found in his backpack and one was under the seat of the subway car. In the backpack was a hatchet and two more smoke "bombs".
This POS had been on the FBI watch list for years and was removed from the list in late 2019. No idea yet as to why he was removed.
He is still out on the loose.
