The way I see it most people do not have the funds, knowledge snd time to start a platform so it is nice to have a one where discord and debate are allowed no matter what views.

Literally nobody has the resources to create a new alternative.

Because of the network effect it would be impossible to create an alternative unless half the users move, or you just buy them.

The platform and network are a piece of cake.

You could build your own Twitter infrastructure for a few million and do it in a few months. But you cannot get the users, ever.

Not even the US government has the resources to build a replacement, because they can't get the users, and the network is useless without the users.

Nobody will join until most of the people they want to talk to have already joined. It's a classic chicken and egg problem.

wise words.

I would add that not only it is hard to get users but to retain them because so many options are already available. So having differentiating factors and new experiences is attractive to consumers and in that sense the change of direction at twitter gives that huge differentiating aspect by allowing free speech.

That's why social media sites that had massive userbases like:
  • Vine
  • Friendster
  • Myspace

Still are market leaders and not in the dustbin. Oh wait.....

Eventually Twitter will disappear too. Nothing to do with my own personal preference or political positions. AltaVista got Yahoo'd, Yahoo got google'd. Some day google will get [InsertSiteNameHere]'d too. Twitter is no different.

That applies to networks of users, not search engines.

If the value of your network is in the user interaction, the users are all the value, and the network is peanuts.

At it's peak MySpace had about 120 million users. That left plenty of unaffiliated people for Facebook to hoover up. It simply wasn't large enough to lock out all competition.

The utility of a network is exponential on the number of users. A network with twice as many users can make many more than twice as many connections.

When MySpace was purchased for half a billion dollars they weren't buying the infrastructure. They could have built that for a few million. They were literally buying the userbase.

They purchased less than $10M dollars worth of hardware and software, and paid $580M dollars for it.

The network effect is a pretty well understood phenomenon.

Vine and Myspace are sketchy and never inspired with a vision. Yahoo was clear suicide by webmail.

It is an Interesting theory but it does not explain why whatsapp didnt get skyped or googled.

Sometimes a service does not need to be too special or have many features, just be reliable and continue to do what they do best.
it is the antithesis of the metaverse mental masturbation deal.
in its simplicity relies twitters strength given they can filter all the junk and senseless echo.
