So a few months ago, before the election, decided that I needed to buy a lower before anything crazy happened, just in case. Went to AllStar after I got back from Colorado and started building. I've probably posted some of these before, but I'm gonna keep em going here.
Kinda hemmed and hawed for a moment, but ended up going with a billet lower and one of their parts kits:
It was a little fun getting this all together. All the different springs and pins and shit, I like working with little things, so I was up for the challenge.
From here, I made a business decision. I figured in the past that if I ever built one, it'd be full of freedom and whatnot, but with Trump being elected, I became hopeful. Decided to go compliant with my build, I'd rather have all the other toys anyway. I want the grips, stocks, babykilling things that go up, bayonets, etc. Opted for the SAFEmod, since I have plenty to lose if anything ever happens. The way they were told, all I need is the screws in it, not the epoxy, since I need a tool to take it out anyways, so I'm going with that.
Added that, along with a Magpul 10 round mag, and Yankee Hill extended takedown pins. The front pin was a cock, since it's an older detent the kit uses, so it's still very grabby. I've had to oil and condition the pin quite a bit.
Saturday I went and added a buffer tube, AST heavy buffer and enhanced spring, and a Magpul ASAP sling mount.
The sling mount was interesting to add, because the little notches on the side that have what looks like a radioactive symbol make it harder to add the spring for the rear takedown pin. It also didn't have a notch to slide on the buffer tube, it has its own keyway that you have to add with something small. There's two of them in the kit, depends on your buffer tube (commercial/non).
To finish it off, I went with a Magpul CTR stock. It has a little lock that keeps it from rattling when it's in place. Kind of finishes off the lower nicely, I like the look and feel of it. Feels very solid.
All in all, I like the whole look and feel of the lower. Had a friend bring an upper over later and it just felt really good. Being compliant is going to be annoying as hell for now, but hopefully the laws change soon. If something ever happened, it's a quick fix, and I'm back in mag drop city.
I probably won't have many updates soon, not til after the holidays, but I am gonna start looking out for upper parts. I don't wanna go too cheap, especially since I haven't really cheaped out on the lower yet. The grip is ok for a kit provided piece, but I'll probably change it out eventually, I like it more grippy.
