One thing we sometimes have a problem with is friends or family who do not have the right mindset thinking that we are paranoid simply because we want to be prepared to deal with unlikely but catastrophic events.

There is always the joke about the zombie apocalypse, but any real SHTF situation is typically looked down on by left leaning people as paranoia.

I have a new suggestion.

When someone asks what you are worried about tell them "climate catastrophe". They will then be forced to either accept your preperation as prudent, or they will have to admit (and even argue) that climate change isn't really a significant risk.

So, when your liberal sister says "why do you need all those guns" at Thanksgiving this year, say "the world is ending in 12 years due to carbon emissions, why aren't you prepping for it too"

What I get is this from the girlfriend ... Why do you need another pair of winter boots .. ? (yep) looking to buy another handgun )? ... Now I work a full time job and 2 part time jobs . When overtime is offered I work. ... Had a co-worker get sick and I worked 7 days straight for perhaps 8 weeks . Sundays was a 4 hour day. 6/12 days ... So yes it gets tough working that many hours and still questioned about spending money...
Now in her defense Several years ago I was working 2 part time jobs and still was not making much money. But bills keep rolling in . . Need tires to pass inspection . teeth capped . and the like .Over time charge cards keep adding up... I have way more on them than I am comfortable with.... Amazon does not help either .. Just a few clicks and one spends a few hundred bucks .... I don't know if it is my downfall but I always look at the reviews and try to purchase the best I can. That means more money.
I recognize her concern .so some months it is a balancing act.
I have more handguns than I need but That California Roster situation will be used in this state someday ... Our leaders talk about "safe guns " .... One day There will be a law passed requiring this ... I have no doubt.
When we go to the range it is not hard to shoot 300 rounds in an hour between us .. I load when she is shooting and vise versa.. So I really get little complaining about ammo purchases . .. Last month I bought a wiggys sleeping bag Sleeping Bags - Wiggy's for her after the comment of "I will just use yours if we loose heat. .. .. Have had the furnace break in the winter before. .. My rational... I will drop 300 plus on your sleeping bag system good to -30 below and we will save on that 300 emergency charge to fix the furnace at 10 pm ... They can get here the next day.... on regular working hours... Early on in our relationship I made it clear I was a prepper /survivalist type of person. . I just tell her that I show my love for her by being prepared if a disaster strikes .. Be it the furnace not working in the winter or buying a flour mill to make real homemade bread that I can cook in my Big green egg. .... Look how healthy it is dear ... Oh by the way dear ... I will have about 500 lbs of wheat delivered this week .. Be on the lookout for it will you ....

While I think the likelihood of a climate change induced catastrophe is essentially 0%, the likelihood of an economy catastrophe brought on by misguided attempts to avoid climate change is significantly higher....
