I was in the same boat as you, actually. Read back my thread here when I was looking for a 308. Why just the 783 or Patriot? Definitely different rifles at different costs.

I shot a 783 a few weeks back when I took my new Axis XP to the range. Friend brought his modded 783 - stock modded to accept AICS mags, new scope, bipod added, factory adjustable trigger. Definitely not bad. Never shot a Patriot yet, but I was definitely interested in it if I could have found one on Bud's for the right price.

Is the Patriot w/ scope or not? If so, I'd say that. I'm guessing it's not though.

What are your goals for the gun. Gonna be a while before you're able to put a scope on the Mossberg, or just getting it now? If you're not gonna get a scope for a while, get the 783, at least you'll have a scope. If you can wait, get the Mossberg.

I modded my trigger on my Savage and I love it, so the adjustable trigger on both is definitely a nice feature.

Don't know where you are, but the Axis XP I got went on sale a lot. $379 normally, but then they dropped it as low as $250 after a $50 mail-in rebate. Doesn't have the Accutrigger, but I modded mine very easily and it's solid.

Yeah, you're definitely in the same boat I am/was/are/is. I really only wanted the rifle so family gave me cash and cards. I went to F&S and Dicks since they share stock and the guy at Dicks literally gave up a sale to tell me to wait until it went on sale again. If you can wait, I'd do that. Spend the rest on ammo/bipod/etc.

Plus, if you get the XP, it comes with the scope so you don't need to rezero it for the different loads. It's a Bushnell too.

Ive got a Patriot in 308.
Mine has wood stock and came with a Vortex scope but your question is about shooting capabilities.
I sighted it in at 100 yards in 4 shots, then took a deer at about 60 yards.
The bolt is as smooth as any $400 gun. Ive had no issues at all.

I bought it at Tall Tales in Russell PA. It was $429 on sale. The scope on it is not bad at sll. Its a Vortex Crossfire 2 3-9x40 scope which retails for around $200. So I figured I couldn't go wrong.

Yes as of right now only semi automatics are regulated like that.

As far as your original question, sorry I don't have any experience with the two rifle you asked about. But if I was in your shoes I would go up a little on what your thinking about spending. For mid range rifles I would get a savage 110 or Remington 700. Both of these rifles have endless aftermarket support. So whatever you decide you want to do with the rifle you can do it. If you want to go up another tier there Begara and Tikka. This was the tier I choose from last year and have a thread on it. Hunting Rifle

For what you've stated your goals are I would go with the 700 or savage.

IMO you can do a few things.

A) Go for the cheapest possible deal on an axis ($240) and do some work on it.

This is the strongest action with compatible barrels with the model 10/11 and the Gen1 trigger that sucks
can be easily upgraded or diy improvement project. The bolt heads are also exchangeable so this gives huge versatility.
No matter what brand you choose in this entry there are things will need improvement. The stocks and scope pacackage
are all garbage w/o exception. The stocks can be improved to a degree for simple hunting and the scopes, well no guarantees
of any kind there.

B) Get a Savage 10/11 xp with the nikon scope.

these are proven actions and the best value wiht a entry scope that actually
holds zero. The stocks are also crap but they can also be improved. At least they have a pillar in some models. They all
come with the accutrigger and the barrels are the most accurate and versatile in entry level rifles consistently. Can exchange
barrels and bolt heads and they are the 2nd most popular action behind the rem700. I got a couple of these for $430 each for
future projects both with the nikon scope so you do the math.

C) Get the 10FCP with the accustock and will not have to touch a thing.

Best value for the money in a budget rifle IMO based
on the consistency one gets out of the box. The long range varmint (not the xp) ride on the same accustock and action but
they are a tad more. Save for the scope and add a better scope later.

D) The tikka is a nice rifle but it comes out to sps budget and stock is also Tupperware garbage.

E) If one is going to bite the bullet and wants a remington 700 action the way it should be done the Bergara B14 is the best value
with features only found in high-end actions that cost x3 its price tag. It leaves the SPS in the dust for comparable cost.

I have been using all these rifles for shooting and builds so if you need more info let me know. Other members are also
getting into some of these platforms. The ruger american is a nice rifle too but the bolt head doesn't float and
since they come out with loose tolerances tipical in rifle budget they are more a hit and miss situation in terms of consistency.
Same thing happens with the mossberg aside from the action being a bit compromised imo. Ok for light calibers but not the ideal
for 7mm-08, 308 or larger calibers.

I haven't read through this thread due to pure laziness, that being said...if you are looking at something in that price point the savage axis would be a big contender. I like Remington's personally but just couldn't bring myself to like the 783 the one time I held one. I do like my ruger American and that is in a similar price range. I know the 783's and axis' are usually marketed with a scope combo to save a little coin for the time. I'm sure there are ruger American scoped combos around....another option to consider is looking for a used rifle.

Personally I'd look into a 30-06 but that is just me and there are enough debates on calibers so go with which ever you decide will work best for you.

I just skimmed through this and saw you have dicks gift cards....if you aren't in a huge rush and like Remington's keep an eye. A long time ago I herd something like Remington and dicks have the same owner somewhere along the line or something. I have always found the best prices on Remington's at dicks when they run a sale consecutively with Remington rebates.

I picked up a 700 sps from them once for a stupid low price by getting 10% off opening a credit card, the sale, and the manufacturer rebate combined. Then scorecard coupons on top.

If you watch you can get a 700 (way better rifle) for a great deal as long as you aren't in a hurry.

I have been a huge Remington 700 fan all my life but in the last 15 years or so I have seen the quality decline big time.
If you like the SPS put the Bergara B14 side by side and compare them and it is like day and night.
Same remington action but all sort of features in the Bergara only found in 1,200 actions (Action only).
The extractor in the bergara is better than the sako and badger due to the off set angle in the lug.
Not only all the features but the tolerances they come out with and the barrels and chamber jobs.
I am telling you becase I have rebarreled the 700 myself (including the SPS) and encountered less than desiderable
job in terms of the machining and tolerances involved. Of course the 700 is a great action to have blue printed
trued and indexed but why do that when you have competing products that do not need any of that in the same
price ranges? Again a wonderful action but IMO Remington fell asleep at the wheel.
The plastic stocks of the 700 like the ADL and SPS are about the worse in the market. They all are bad but these
are not even good candidates to do some bedding. In the case of the hogue is such a pity because the nice feel
and positive grip fo the rubberized finishing but the stock touches the barrel and that is absurd for a SPS.
If you think about it hogue has one with aluminum bedding that is just a $80 difference when bought new but
remington doesn't use those.
At the other hand the accustock from savage in the same category is a very rigid and reasonable stock
one can work with whether you do pull or push shooting including prone.
Remington 700 actions are tanks but it is not particularly easy to get them right and factory barrels are
also all over the place including the 5R that is a expensive one. No consistency there.
I guess that is why people buy them and many end up selling all the parts and then blue printing and
rebarrelling right away. Then they become great rifles for anything including competition and law enforcement.
It is not cheap though.
If one wants to see pictures of tenons cut like crap and chambers cut on the loose side I have a few.
In the entry budge there are much better choices, of course always considering the limitations of many
of those with tupperware stocks and toy quality scopes in some packages.

New to You! I would not shy away from the used gun rack at your LGS. You could find better value in an older rifle, As Meke stated about the newer Remington's I to am not to impressed with them! I have my Dad's 1986 model 700, 30.06 and it's a beauty. Good Luck with what ever you chose!

I did the same thing when I went a-looking. I visited Gander first, see if there was anything on the shelf that someone turned in that I could get away with. Nothing but shotguns and expensive lever actions. I even cruised Bud's Gun Shop too, that's a great website, lots of stuff on there, but it's not all used. Just more options listed. I was starting to think about settling on a nice Patriot package before the Savage went on sale.

I picked up a 783 chambered in 308 for Xmas and am very happy with it. I was very surprised with the overall quality of it.

I am def a pistol guy though so just my 2 cents.

Another brand that is priced good is Howa, It is the same rifle as the Weatherby Vanguard. I have 2 of them 308 and 223 well made and good shooters!
