@Dayten, have you ever even tried an AR setup like the one I posted? I have hundreds of thousands of rounds on ARs, from my issue M16A2 to the Colt 6920 with the LE markings I bought right after the AWB sunseted and at least 10k since I got back into the AR game a few years ago after I moved. Trust me, the free floated extended hanguard with a forward grip is an improvement.

By forward grip I mean being able to grasp the handguard further up. Vertical foregrips aren't really needed because you have the extra grasping space.

Verticle grips are needed on aluminum handguards on select fire weapons. They aid in keeping you from burning your hands.
As far as 5.56 being weak, well its not. It is in fact devastating. Whether by fragmentation or expansion the fast moving 5.56 dumps a lot of energy and destroys a lot of tissue when it hits.
The 7.62x39 is mostly renowned for icepicking straight though and not causing very much damage. In Vietnam the NVA and Veitcong feared the damage the M193 ball ammo caused whereas a lot of GIs survived the pair of .30 holes their AK armed opponents dished out.
The M855 was a step backward, especially in Somalia against the skeletally thin people there but even the M855 will fuck your day up badly.
What you have with 5.56 that you don't have with 7.62x39 is projectile choice. Heavy OTMs give enhanced range and precision and are extremely effective in soft tissue. Bonded soft points and hollow points give stable performance under a wide variety of conditions and through intermediary barriers.
With 7.62x39 you pretty much are stuck with vanilla FMJ.
The 5.56 is far more versatile.
The Russians did switch to the 5.45x39 after all, and most AK aficionados recognize the 5.45 as the superior round. Ah @Dayten, you missed the days of $174 2160 round 7n6 crates. Only .22lr was cheaper!

Gloves? Even in semi auto I do admit those handguards get Godawful hot. But I gotta say the Magpul type 2 Mlok covers do an impressive job of insulating your hand against the heat. They have a really grippy texture too, I highly recommend them.

Even with gloves they can get too hot to handle. My scar 16/17 gets stupid hot....and they are semi auto.
I have some of those magpul "breecher" gloves(what? They were 50% of at a Gander closeout sale!) Just thin leather but I can hang onto the handguards of either my ARs when they heat up. I can feel the warmth through the covers and gloves but it never gets uncomfortable.
Ah, but piston guns like the SCAR dump all their heat into the handguard area don't they!
On the traditional Stoner system it all goes into the receiver away from your hands and a lot just gets vented out the side of the BCG.
The more I shoot them the more and more I appreciate the Stoner "Internal Gas Piston" design.
My Galil gets idiotically hot too. You could cook food on the top rail after a few mags worth.

Select fire stoner designed aystems with aluminum handguards get too hot to handle (even with thin gloves) very quickly. Even traditional plastic HG get very hot very quickly.....not nearly as bad as the aluminum ones.

What I'm saying though is that the plastic covers on top on the aluminum guard mitigates the heat better than you might think. And the Magpul ones have good vertical coverage.
Full auto may well overwhelm them but for semi auto fire they work really well. That's why I bought the second set for the DD after my experience with them on the NYGF build.

Every post i have made regarding aluminum hand guards and vertical grips and an AR (M16/M4) being extremely hot has been prefaced with “select fire”.
Obviously on semi auto it is not an issue
(The exception being the SCAR and I specifically said theybwere semi. And technically it is not an AR. )

The military uses right angles grips and vertical grips.. i like those as stated before. Maybe special forces has the goofy ones but from what I’ve seen they use vertical.
Seen a lot of vertical for grips in the arms room for the taking. The newbies try them out, some like them most don’t. They are really good for getting your weapon caught on everything though.

I used to run one because when I was in, nobody had one. The Safe Act said that I couldn't have one. Since talking it off, I see that it's much better.
And Dsdmatt is correct. It does snag on things. Especially in a vehicle. I put one back on after joining the National Guard and took it off after a while.

Everything snags in a vehicle. My own web gear got caught up in the seatbelt of the HEMTT I was driving once. Made me fall right on my face when I got out. Fuckin' thing.
Anyways, my rifle shipped with a vert grip. Never used it, I like hand stops better.
I like the stubby vertical BCM grip I put on my Galil though. But I grasp it like you would an angled foregrip.

Yeah and as mentioned before the military is about 10-15 years behind when it comes to accessories. And those just get used as hand stops, if you stop and take the time to understand how the body works, how leverage works, how recoil works maybe then you can adjust your thinking and get up with modern times
