NEW Surefire lights - extreme output

A few folks around here prefer to shoot in the dark with just a few lumens output on a weapon mounted light. For the rest of us (that actually want to see and identify targets) these may be worth a look.

Pistol light at 1,000 lumens.

I was never issued a 1500 lumens light for my rifle.

In fact we were required to use red lens by my unit.

You don't use weapon lights in the field. That's a sure way to get you killed.

It is always nice to have the option to identify your target. One reason is so you don't kill a friendly. But if you prefer to have no nightvision and no weapon light in the field have at it. Since you can't id them do you just ask them?... "Hey, it is Will. Who goes there?"

You don't need 1500 lumens to identify a target across a room or hallway.

And why would you choose to limit yourself to id targets only in a room or hallway? You could never need to id targets outside or in a large building?

I don't hate Freddy. I think he's off on certain issues but if I agree with him on something, I'll like his post. I don't take things personally because I disagree with someone on one topic.

I don't ignore anyone. It's stupid and when you don't see someone's posts, you end up misinterpreting the flow of the thread and you end up looking like a jackass. I see it all the time. It's happened to me when I ignored someone. Also the person in your ignore list could make you look like a fool and you'd have no clue.

Look, more is usually better but not always necessary. If there were an improved output option in the x300 size I might get one but I don't want to hang a two cell light on my rifle. I currently have an Elzetta Alpha 1 cell light on my AR. Its rated at 300 lumens in a broad even beam. It completely illuminates a darkened room as brightly as the overhead light. Why would I need any more than that?

Come on now. Broad daylight would be ideal. No WML will do that, but 300 lumens ain't lighting "a darkened room as brightly as the overhead light". If Surefire would exchange your Elvira Alpha for $5 you would do it.

I'm telling you that my light provides more than enough ligh to identify anything in the room. For SD a flood pattern is better. Remeber a weapon light is used for only a momentary burst for target verification. You shouldn't be using it for scanning/searching.

I keep a hand held a light on the bedside table, that could be as big and bright as you wanted.

For law enforcement where you are lighting up vehicles and generally aren't engaging in combat, hell a 5000 would be preferable.

But when engaged in combat, you want no light. And when you need one in combat, you want a subdued one for momentary 1 second use. Even when going door to door.

Well, we are really only talking about self defense as civilians. We should not be pointing guns at unidentfied bogies, we really shouldn't be engaging beyond 100 yards. What we need is a light that offers a broad beam with enough brightness to easily identify targets out to a reasonable distance. We are not trying to spot German night bombers over London here. Personally I'm wanting to keep anything attached to my guns as light and compact as possible, especially on an AR.

Never been in the military. But, in the low-light course I took, the instructor (a combat veteran) told us that during combat, "...lights and muzzle flashes attract bullets."

During the same course, he also emphasized that civilians using firearms in and around occupied buildings and close quarters in low-light situations must always identify targets before shooting. He chastised one of the students that took shots at a target before his momentary flashlight was deployed and used to illuminate his target.
