You guys are funny. A cell phone screen in a dark room could identify a target. How many lumens is that? We use it all the time to find the remote we dropped on the floor from the bed. A low powered light with a red lens can as well and it's more practical. You guys don't know what your family members look like? You think you'll have trouble identifying your son at 3 in the morning walking down the hallway with a bag of Cheetos in his hand with a low powered red light that you instead need a 3000 lumens torch?
These ultra high lumen lights are marketing ploys. After a certain amount of lumens, they actually do more harm than good and you are paying for lumens that give you absolutely nothing extra in regards to better target ID.
Let your eyes adjust fully in a pitch dark room, blast that big light at a target on the wall and see if you'll be able to see your target after the light goes out. You'll have to leave it on in order to see him if he moves and you have to take a shot.
Lights are supposed to be for target ID. Not for blinding. If they blind your target, they'll partially blind you. You don't want to be partially blinded if you have to take a shot in the dark.

Not that I think I'd ever actually use the Galil in a defensive role but the line of thought for the Streamlight HL-X was to have a light with some decent throw to match the the longer ranged niche of the rifle it would go on.

Different tools, different jobs. In my case I want to be able to light up the whole back yard and ID a target using spill over light. Mostly because in my case I'm not worried about coyotes shooting back and any 2 legged predators likely wouldn't be either.
Inside the house, not so much. I usually keep the PD set in the middle of brightness modes, easy enough to switch up as needed.

To 100 yards. The HL-X can throw a beam out that far. Think rooftop riot gun.

I wouldn't want to use a light in a riot.
I would, I'd wanna verify the wouldbe looter I was about to plug wasn't the neighbor's kid or dog or something. And there is the "I see you motherfucker" factor as well, and if you are spotlighting someone with 1000 lumens they aren't going to be able make out much of you.

Why would your neighbor's kid or dog be on your roof in the pitch black of night during a riot?
Even so, after you run out with nothing but your skivies on and a .308, do you think the crook is going to just stand there on the roof while you shine this enormous spotlight on him? After he runs, how will you see him when you yourself are blinded? Will you keep the light on to track his movements?
Would you do the same in combat in Iraq? Probably not.
No offense but that's just silly.
Would you please think logically and within historical precedent? In the LA riots and the Ferguson riots you had rifleman up on the rooftops covering the streets below, at a range beyond the typical self defense distance. I wouldn't care what the bogey down below does when I throw the light on him, he'll either continue doing what he is doing and I may need to take a shot, or he'll bug out which is the better outcome. In either case I will will have the visual data I need to evaluate my action. How am I blinding myself with a 1000 lumen light in the open, on a target 25 to 50 yards away?
I think this particular role is well suited to a high output light source. Also in a riot, I'm guessing the considerable ruckus, and all the build up to, of the riot will have left me time to throw some clothes on, or more likely not have put the PJs on and gone to bed in the first place, as well as grabbing some basic gear. Now that I have a lo pro type "battle" belt I can keep a basic loadout that is ready to go in seconds consisting of 2 pistol mags two rifle mags, IFAK, small pouch of misc general stuff and maybe a water bottle. Plus the pistol obviously.

Why? I have a nice little one from Blue Gear. It can be mounted onto any belt from 1.5" to 2" via these little velcro straps. If I could figure out how to pack it right it'd be nice and flat.

And if it's that dark that you need a light to see them, you don't think that a bright light compromises your night vision even if shone out in the open?
During riots, it isn't going to be one dude. They travel in packs and if they make it to the suburbs to try and loot private, occupied houses, they aren't going to do so unarmed. At least any group of below average intelligence wouldn't.
A light is a target no matter what. I don't know. I guess I always look at things from a military perspective. We're I to do that, it would be from fixed flood lights mounted on the roof or the side of the house rather than from a weapon light beamed from a rifle's barrel so that I can move around in the shadows undetected.

Dude its a theoretical situation. Like I say I bought the Galil for fun, I don't see enough advantages over my 5.56 ARs for me to use it as a defensive tool. But one scenario I can see it being more useful is in a riot where guys might be in body armor, improvised or otherwise and in and using vehicles.

No, instead its- you hear a noise, see a shape you think its a bad guy but aren't totally sure so before you pull the trigger you give it a quick flash to identify and verify and if you need to you fire. Or maybe at the last moment you see its a homless person rooting through the trash or something.

I did indeed put a Streamlight HL-X on the Galil. Its rated at 1,000 lumens which is considerably more than the 300 lumens of my other two rifle lights. In fact 300 lumens is rather piddly these days. However after stalking around my apartment in the dark (yeah I'm weird) with all three I have come to the conclusion that for target ID purposes at least the single cell 300 lumen lights are more than adequate for illuminating an entire room, the HL-X was brighter but I didn't see anything with it that I couldn't already see with the smaller lights. Outdoors it would be a different story. Or if one lived In a mansion. On the otherhand reflected spill from the HL-X wasn't blinding me either.
Really I think it depends more on if you ate willing to deal with the extra size and weight of a brighter light. For a handy HD carbine a 300 lumen SureFire Scout is plenty adequate.

That said what I have on the one carbine isn't technically a Surefire but is actually a Malkoff Devices emitter head on an Arisaka body that is based of the 300 Scout. I could always see if there is a brighter emitter head available that can be driven by a single CR123.

I just use muzzle flash to illuminate and identify a target.
That is a technique. Of course it requires you to fire at a target you haven't identified which could spell your legal doom.
